As you have probably heard by now, yesterday the New England Patriots wheeled Jon Bostic to the Detroit Lions for a seventh round pick. Here are four ripple effects in the wake of Bostic heading back to the AFC North:

4. Good news for veteran linebacker additions

The Patriots traded for Bostic last September to increase depth and add a special teams contributor. After Bostic posted just one tackle (an assisted tackle, at that) in 2015, he was evidently viewed as expendable.

Evaluating roster chances of every Patriots draft pick

Filling his shoes could very well be another veteran linebacker. The Patriots’ first signing of free agency was Ramon Humber; although an unknown playing in New England, Humber was actually the longest-tenured defensive player on the New Orleans’ Saints roster before his release. Humber is a solid special teamer and an experienced backup linebacker.

Don’t forget about former Buffalo Bills linebacker Tony Steward, who the Pats signed a few weeks back. With Bostic out of the picture, Steward has a better chance of making the roster of his former divisional rival.
