Round 3, Pick 29 (No. 91 overall) – Jacoby Brissett

The lowdown: Brissett joined Thuney as North Carolina State products drafted by the Patriots on Day 2. Arm strength, mobility and touch passing are Brissett’s calling cards as a quarterback. His creativity and knack for the big play are intriguing. The Patriots probably could have gotten him in the fourth round, so it’s telling that they felt the need to snag him in the third.

Where he could fit: In the short-term while Tom Brady serves his suspension, Brissett will fit squarely in the No. 2 role as long as he fends off whatever veteran passer the Pats may bring in during training camp. When Brady returns, Brissett will likely find himself on the practice squad. That being said, consider him a candidate for taking over the reins in the post-Brady era.

Immediate reaction to Patriots selecting Jacoby Brissett

Who he will be competing against: As previously mentioned, Brissett will have to beat-out a veteran quarterback in the event the Patriots make a signing between now and training camp. More broadly speaking, Brissett will be competing against Jimmy Garoppolo from here on out to take over starting duties when Brady retires. The Patriots don’t want Jimmy G getting complacent.

Roster chances: 9/10. Unless Brissett completely falls apart in training camp, the Patriots are going to groom him into the No. 2 role for the first month before developing him on the practice squad when Brady returns. He’s a promising young player.
