Earlier this week, our very own Hal Bent pondered three potential breakout stars on offense. Continuing along that theme, here are six breakout candidates on the other side of the ball:

6. Justin Coleman

Coleman was re-signed this offseason after proving his worth in the No. 3 role in 2015. An undrafted rookie last year, Coleman joined the Patriots in early September after spending training camp with the Minnesota Vikings, and he slowly but surely improved over the course of the season.

No, Coleman isn’t the flashiest cornerback, but was dependable in the nickel role and his presence was missed in the last month of the regular season as he dealt with a nasty head injury.

Upon returning  in the playoffs, Coleman immediately performed for the Patriots, recording a pass breakup in each of the postseason games.

Coleman lands on this list of breakout candidates on defense because he could very likely start the season as the No. 3 corner. With an entire offseason at the Patriots’ practice facility, Coleman’s game will only improve in 2016.
