1. Defensive end

Here is the Patriots’ current (unofficial) depth chart at defensive end:

1. Jabaal Sheard

2. Rob Ninkovich

3. Chris Long

4. Geneo Grissom

5. Trey Flowers

At first glance, this looks great. And it is. But keep in mind that Ninkovich (32) and Long (31) are no spring chickens, and it’s hard to see either of those guys playing into the next decade. The Patriots will draft a defensive end in the 2016 NFL Draft to ensure that a starter comes up through the ranks to replace Ninkovich and Long down the road.

Of course, Grissom and Flowers were drafted last year for that same reason. And both of those guys will be given opportunities to contribute in 2016 and prove their worth. But first, both Grissom and Flowers will have to out-compete any and all defensive ends the Patriots add through the draft or post-draft process this spring and summer.

Having an energetic, productive pass rush for the modern NFL defense is arguably as essential as having a true No. 1 corner; the Patriots must continue to keep the defensive end position fresh.

Target: Carl Nassib
