2. Cornerback

Here is the Patriots’ current (unofficial) cornerback depth chart, which we reordered after the signing of E.J. Biggers:

1. Malcolm Butler

2. Logan Ryan

3. E.J. Biggers

4. Justin Coleman

5. Darryl Roberts

6. Rashaan Melvin

The reasoning for urging the Patriots to draft another cornerback is simple: you can’t have enough good cornerbacks in today’s pass-happy NFL. It’s wise to draft one every spring, and sign another one or two undrafted free agents at the position to enhance training camp competition.

The Patriots are all set with Butler and Ryan occupying the two starting positions, but they need to improve upon the No. 3 spot that hindered the entire secondary in 2015. You see, the Patriots utilize the nickel defense with regularity, so the No. 3 corner is essentially a starter as well.

Coleman was suitable in the role when he was on the field, which is why the Patriots brought him back this year. But there is room for improvement, which is why Biggers was signed, as he excelled in the nickel with the Philadelphia Eagles last season.

In addition to the No. 3 consideration, the Patriots may want to draft a taller cornerback to start on the outside and move Ryan to the nickel role. Food for thought.

Target: Cyrus Jones (for No. 3 role), Maurice Canady (for taller, No. 2 option)
