Patriots: Visualizing Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett
Perhaps the best piece of New England Patriots news this offseason was the addition of Martellus Bennett to join Rob Gronkowski and give the Patriots the best tight end group in the NFL. It appears that this is not a dream; Bennett is actually a Patriot. Wow.
What will this look like?
Let’s start with the aesthetics of it. You’ll be seeing a ton of two-tight end sets on Sundays this fall. Both Gronk and Bennett stand at 6-foot-6, providing Tom Brady with twin towers at his disposal.
MUST-READ: Ranking Patriots’ most impactful offseason additions
From a statistical standpoint, you would be hard-pressed to find more productive tight ends than Gronk and Bennett. Over the last two seasons, the two have combined for 297 catches, 3,655 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Don’t forget, in addition to the towering targets, Brady has spark plug running backs Dion Lewis and James White at his disposal out of the backfield. And, of course, there’s trusty Julian Edelman running underneath routes to complement Gronk and Bennett. We’ll have to see what Chris Hogan can bring to the table, but there’s reason to believe he will be an upgrade over Brandon LaFell. Hopefully, Danny Amendola takes a pay cut and sticks around to really round-out this group of pass catchers.
With all these weapons on the field at once, any semblance of a ground game will make Gronk and Bennett just about unstoppable. At least, that’s what Rex Ryan thinks:
"I just think it’s unusual to have two guys that are like 6-[foot]-7 and can run, catch, block. So, yeah, it’s going to be a major challenge. There’s no doubt about that. It’s scary when you look at them. Those are two huge guys. How we’re going to defend them, I don’t know."

It looks like Gronk and Bennett already are familiar with each other, too. In a one-on-one interview with Patriots.com, Martellus Bennett spoke about meeting up with Rob Gronkowski in Los Angeles before getting traded to the Patriots:
"I actually saw Rob, we work out in the same place in L.A., so we just crossed paths the other day. I think it will be fun. I’m interested to see the way they want to use us together, and the way they put the offense together. I have no idea what the plan is, but I know they have a plan for having us both on the field at the same time a lot."
Patriots fans should be ecstatic to see these two mammoths play alongside each other in 2016. For an aging Brady, it’s especially important that the Patriots surround No. 12 with potent threats, and they certainly are doing that thus far this offseason.
