3. Add linebacker depth

The retirement of Jerod Mayo this offseason opens the door for an addition to the linebacker corps in Patriots free agency. The Pats need an upgrade over their current depth of Jonathan Freeny, Dekoda Watson and Jon Bostic behind superstars Jamie Collins and Dont’a Hightower.

Over the course of the offseason, this writer has identified three free agents as good fits in New England: Demario Davis, Rolando McClain and Danny Trevathan.

First off, signing Davis would be addition by subtraction from a divisional rival. Davis put forth another solid season in 2015, accumulating 89 tackles and two sacks. It should be noted that Davis is very durable having never missed a regular season games in four NFL seasons.

You have to respect the defensive prowess of the Jets, and if the Patriots were able to nab one of that unit’s more vibrant pieces, it would be huge.

McClain also comes to mind because the Patriots have displayed interest in him before, plus he’s an excellent coverage linebacker.

Last but certainly not least, Trevathan would be a dream backup behind Collins and Hightower, as he’s one of the better inside linebackers in the league himself. But he will come at a price, and the Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears are reportedly making a push for him.
