Hello and welcome to a Deflategate-inspired edition of Food for Thought. Now that Tom Brady is feeling the heat in court a bit, you have to wonder if the whispers of the Patriots trading away Jimmy Garoppolo hold as much weight. Is it more likely that the Patriots won’t even think about trading Garoppolo with the threat of Brady missing the first four games of the 2016 season?

When you stop and think about it, the Patriots may really, really want to hang on to Garoppolo with the possibility of Brady missing the first month of 2016. If you’re Garoppolo, it’s got to feel a little funny to be back in this spot again. Will he make his starting debut for the Patriots in Week 1 of 2016?

There is still a long way to go before that materializes, but it should make the Patriots stop and think about Jimmy G as their long-term answer at quarterback again. No Patriots fan would quibble with the Patriots retaining their promising third-year backup passer in the wake of Thursday’s events in the courtroom.

Of course, we should also take yesterday’s action with a grain of salt. If there is one thing we’ve learned in this whole Deflategate saga, it’s that there will always be another sharp turn in the roller coaster ride. But right now, it looks like the Patriots had better hang on to a developing quarterback who has two years of studying under Brady in the Pats’ complex offense.
