In the wake of the New England Patriots parting ways with pass catchers Brandon LaFell and Scott Chandler, there is room for a free agent wide receiver or tight end (or both) to be signed this offseason. Ladarius Green comes to mind as an option for the Patriots in free agency, which makes him the subject of this morning’s edition of Food for Thought.

At 6-foot-6 and boasting great athleticism, Green would be an ideal replacement for the clunky Chandler in the Patriots’ passing attack. Just think of the advantages that would come about with two-tight end sets involving Rob Gronkowski and Green.

However, the San Diego Chargers are doing their best to lock-up Green for the long-term, as they envision him as Antonio Gates’ replacement. If the Chargers are smart, they will outbid any other team in free agency to retain one of the more promising young tight ends in the NFL right now.

But you can’t help wondering about the range of benefits Green would bring to the Patriots’ offense. Certainly, the Patriots wouldn’t cut LaFell and Chandler on the same day without having it in the back of their hand about signing an intriguing free agent pass catcher. Who knows, maybe Green will be that guy.
