3. Special teams miscues

As noted by ESPN’s Mike Reiss earlier this week, the Patriots slipped from No. 3 to No. 11 in the Dallas Morning News special teams rankings. Bill Belichick was not happy about the slide.

Yes, the Patriots’ special teams have left something to be desired this season. For instance, the Patriots’ 35-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13 can be attributed to poor special teams play; a blocked field goal that led to a Philly touchdown and Darren Sproles’ 83-yard punt return touchdown.

It’s absolutely paramount that the Patriots avoid special teams miscues in the AFC Championship Game. A muffed fair catch, a blown blocking assignment on a punt or gashing on kickoff coverage could be the difference against an opportunistic Denver team.
