3. Week 1, 2008 – Patriots 17, Chiefs 10

Yeah, you remember this game.

The first quarter of the season following the Patriots’ spoiled bit at perfect season was marred by Bernard Pollard falling on Brady’s plant leg, destroying the quarterback’s ACL and MCL. It was perhaps the most terrifying moment in the history of Patriots’ fandom.

Brady had been sharp in the first quarter before this injury, hitting seven of his 11 attempts for 76 yards. And even though the Patriots went on to win this game, it was really a loss for the Patriots because they were to be without their most prized possession for the remainder of the season.

Matt Cassel stepped in smoothly after Brady’s departure to the locker room, completing 13 of 18 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown with no picks. To help fill the void left by Brady in the offense, the Pats employed their backfield committee of Bam-Bam Sammy Morris and Laurence Maroney. Those two combined for 104 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
