Bill Belichick

Opening statement…
It was a competitive game here today. We had our chances. But in the end (we) just couldn’t quite make enough plays. Give the Jets credit. That’s a good football team, well-coached. They did their job. We just came up a little bit short today.

On why he chose to kick off to start overtime…
I thought that was the best thing to do.

On what his instructions to Matthew Slater were for the overtime coin toss…
There wasn’t any confusion.

On how much time he spent thinking about whether or not to kick off to start overtime…
I don’t know.

AFC Power Rankings Week 17: Steelers fall

On how the offensive line protected Tom Brady…
They had a good defense. Obviously, the Jets are a good defensive team and we didn’t really do much offensively. We had 200 yards probably halfway through the fourth quarter. We didn’t stop the run very well, didn’t move the ball very well (and) couldn’t score. So, we just didn’t do enough things to win.

On if he regrets the decision to kick off in overtime…
No. There was a pass interference penalty on third down, they got the stop, we get the ball back where we want it. Then we get picked, beat on two flag patterns. We just didn’t play good enough defense.

On if he was thinking about the defense playing better than the offense when electing to kick off…
Looking at field position.

On why they didn’t try to score at the end of the first half…
We didn’t have very good field position. We have the ball to start the second half so we took it there.

On what he saw on Quincy Enunwa’s long overtime reception…
They ran a simple deep slant and we got picked, ran into each other (and) gave up a long play. It was second and, I don’t know, eight, whatever it was. They were throwing a short pass to try to get to third and short, I imagine. We ran into each other.

On if there was any confusion after the overtime coin toss…
There wasn’t any confusion. I just answered that same question. There was no confusion.

On if he would have considered kicking off to start overtime under the old overtime rules…
I don’t know. I’m not about hypothetical questions.

On how Steven Jackson played…
We’ll see. He played a few plays, got started. We’ll see how it goes.

On how Keshawn Martin played…

I thought he competed hard. I thought all our guys competed hard. We’ve just got to coach better, play better (and) execute better.
