New England Patriots made a bunch of roster moves on Tuesday

3. Jimmay Mundine, Chris Barker and D.J. Lynch were released
Signed as an undrafted rookie by the Pats in early June, Mundine was always a long shot to make the final roster. The presence of Rob Gronkowski, Scott Chandler and Michael Hoomanawanui on the depth chart makes that final tight end spot (not all teams carry four tight ends, but the Patriots will) very much in high demand and short supply.
As I predicted earlier this summer when profiling Barker, his chances of making the team were slim to none. Although Jordan Devey got shipped off to San Francisco, there still wasn’t room for Barker to make much of an impression on the offensive line. The guard positons are being taken by rookies Tre’ Jackson and Shaq Mason and veterans Josh Kline and Cameron Fleming.
When profiling Lynch back in late July, I really thought he could stand out in training camp and preseason and squeak onto the 53-man roster. I was wrong, obviously.
It didn’t help Lynch’s development in the Patriots’ system when his summer became disjointed after the Pats released him. Although he was brought back on, the impression was always that Lynch wouldn’t be able to last.
These were some tough cuts, especially Lynch, but that’s just the reality at this time of year.
