5. Chris Harper will earn a roster spot and contribute

With rumors swirling that Brandon LaFell could begin the regular season on the PUP list, the Patriots will need to bring on another wideout. After Julian Edelman (whose status for Week 1 is also iffy), Danny Amendola and Reggie Wayne, there is room for Harper to squeak onto the roster. Especially if Aaron Dobson continues to disappoint in live action.

Harper’s name emerged after he played in 73 of 79 possible offense snaps against the New Orleans Saints, the Pats’ second preseason game. The Cal product snagged five catches for 69 yards and a touchdown in that game, and he also ran back a punt 28 yards that would ultimately lead to the winning score for the Patriots.

Here’s Harper acting like a well-trained undrafted rookie after the game:

"There have been a couple injuries and it’s ‘next man up’ and I’m just trying to make the most of my opportunities."

Harper certainly is making the most of his opportunities. He is tracking upwards right now, enough to make me think that should the Patriots cut him, Harper won’t have trouble find work in another NFL city.

I can see Harper catching 30 passes for 400 yards and four scores, filling-in for various injured guys above him when needed.
