Running Back
Key Takeaway: James White the next Vereen?
Even though there were only three running backs active on Thursday, I think it was telling that James White was the leading man. White was on the field for 44 of a possible 63 snaps against Green Bay, as he got a great opportunity to showcase his talents as the next third down back in New England.
He wasn’t that effective on the ground, as he took eight carries for only 12 yards, but he was very effective in the receiving game, which is where the Patriots need him to excel going forward. White snagged four receptions on five targets for 52 yards, and he showed that he can pass block when needed. I’m not saying he had a perfect game, because believe me, it was far from perfect, but he showed me enough to make me think that by the middle of this season, he will be the top passing back in this offense.
The other running back that shined on Thursday was obviously Jonas Gray, who carried the ball seven times for 74 yards and a touchdown. The big back was powerful as he usually is, but also showed some nice speed in his 55-yard touchdown scamper. LeGarrette Blount is still the top guy right now, but having someone like Gray behind him is nice to not only keep everybody fresh, but not see a huge drop-off in talent when Blount goes off the field.
