Patriots Roster Into Training Camp

Patriots’ training camp opens up soon and there are plenty of players on the roster bubble, as well as some moves that might shake things up as well.

Tom Brady

Let’s say that Brady’s suspension is exonerated by commissioner Goodell some time this week, what would that do to the QB situation? I think if Brady wins the appeal, or takes it to court and he is allowed to play the whole season, Matt Flynn will be cut. Flynn’s not that great of a QB and Brady and Jimmy G will be more than enough moving forwards.

Running Backs on the Chopping Black

Right now, there are only 3 running backs with any level of job security: Blount, White and Bolden. That means that Cadet, Gaffney, Gray, and everyone else would be on their way out. Rumor has it that Tyler Gaffney is actually making heads turn in camp, so he might be able to stick around. The others however, probably won’t make it. Outside of the Indy game last year Gray did nothing, and anyone could have ran for 150+ against that crap Colts’ run defense. Gray isn’t special and he isn’t dynamic. Cadet was signed to take Vereen’s receiving role, but he might also be cut if Gaffney or White can assume those duties, which is highly possible. Cadet isn’t the best blocker, which will probably hurt him a lot.

One More Super Bowl Defender Cut

Every year there’s a surprise cut in camp. This year I think  it’ll be Alan Branch. Branch came on strong during the playoffs and is a polished vet, but he’s also on the down side of his career. That could lead him to getting cut if someone like Malcolm Brown or Dominique Easley really steps up between now and the start of the season.

Veteran Presence Brought In

There are still dozens of veterans looking to be added to an NFL roster.  The two I am talking about right now are Reggie Wayne and James Jones. The Patriots don’t need more receivers. LaFell, Edelman and Amendola are firmly entrenched as the starters, but what if one goes down? The back end of the receiving core is completely unproven. I think Reggie of James would provide a lot of poise and leadership as well as be a nice complementary piece to the receiving core.
