New England Patriots Are Interested In Reggie Wayne
By Cyrus Geller
According to Dave Furst of ABC, the New England Patriots are one of four teams interested in wide receiver Reggie Wayne.
I understand why the Ravens and Texans are looking at Wayne, but I just don’t understand why the Pats and Packers are interested, particularly New England.
When you look at the Patriots’ depth at receiver, it is honestly one of the best in the AFC. They have a great 1-2 combination in Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell, a top third option in Danny Amendola, and guys like Brandon Gibson, Aaron Dobson, and Brian Tyms bringing up the rear. That is an extremely talented group of receivers, especially considering they have the best overall offensive weapon in the game at tight end in Rob Gronkowski.

So why would the Pats be interested in Reggie Wayne? Obviously being interested doesn’t mean they are definitely going to pursue him, but I don’t get why New England needs someone like Wayne. If the Pats refuse to spend any time developing Aaron Dobson and Brian Tyms, of course they will never turn into top notch outside receivers. And by bringing in a veteran like Wayne to take their spot on the depth chart, the Patriots are stunting the development of Tyms and Dobson.
Both of those two players have the potential to make an impact in this league, but they need time to work with Tom Brady, and adjust to the NFL game. It doesn’t help that the Pats have guys like Edelman and Gronk in front of them, because as long as those two are here, Dobson and Tyms won’t be getting many targets.
Adding Wayne doesn’t help anything. It only hurts the young guys the Pats are trying to bring up.
