New England Patriots Kick-Off in 60 Days: Profiling No. 60 David Andrews

Opening day countdowns are great. So are player profiles. Here at Musket Fire, we decided to combine them and create a Week 1 countdown-oriented, jersey number-dictated player profile series. Yesterday, we looked at No. 61 Marcus Cannon, and the day before that it was No. 62 Ryan Wendell. Because today marks 60 days until the New England Patriots open 2015, we are profiling No. 60, center David Andrews.

First off, let’s wish a belated happy birthday to Andrews. He turned 23 this past Friday.

As an undrafted rookie, it’s never easy. But think of Andrews as a poor man’s Bryan Stork. Like Stork, Andrews had a terrific college career: 40 starts in 50 games, three consecutive years of captainship and Second-Team All-ACC honors.

When the Patriots draft centers, they look for leadership. In the case of Andrews, that is possibly his best asset. He was the undisputed leader of a 2014 Georgia offensive line that was one of the school’s best in recent memory, and he was also named the team’s MVP.

That said, it’s going to be tough for Andrews to make the team. He’s awfully small for an NFL center at 294 pounds, and his run blocking strengths lie in zone blocking schemes. From a personnel perspective, the Patriots already have their starting center in Stork, and a versatile backup option in Wendell, who can play both guard and center.

With that in mind, it’s difficult to imagine a scenario in which the Patriots bring on Andrews to the 53-man roster. However, he has the talent and potential to someday be active on an NFL roster, so look for him to land on the practice squad.

In case you missed them, here are the profiles for No. 63 Tre’ Jackson, No. 64 Chris Barker, No. 65 Jordan Devey, No. 66 Bryan Stork, No. 67 Josh Kline, No. 68 Caylin Hauptmann, No. 69 Shaq Mason, No. 71 Cameron Fleming, No. 72 Joe Vellano, No. 74 Trey Flowers, No. 76 Sebastian Vollmer, No. 77 Nate Solder, No. 80 Danny Amendola, No. 82 Josh Boyce and No. 84 Brian Tyms.

Be sure to check back on Musket Fire tomorrow morning as we celebrate 59 days until Week 1 by profiling No. 59, linebacker Chris White.
