Oct 26, 2014; Foxborough, MA, USA; New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (87) looks on during the second half of New England

Category 5: Best Comeback Athlete

  • Rob Gronkowski (Patriots)
  • Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)
  • Derrick Rose (Bulls)
  • Lindsey Vonn (Skiing)

A-Rod did steroids, so he’s out. Rose made a valiant comeback, but he didn’t make a big enough impact in his sport to be considered above Gronk, and the same can be said for Vonn, although I do admire her toughness for that comeback she made after all the injuries.

When Rob Gronkowski blew out his ACL back in the 2013 season, a lot of people thought he would never play again. Let’s remember, Gronk had just come back from a broken forearm, and then back surgery, and he still wasn’t 100% when T.J. Ward took that cheap shot on him.

But Gronk didn’t give up.

Instead, he came back better than ever, absolutely dominating the NFL, and he was the biggest difference between this Super Bowl winning Patriots team, and the last couple that fell short. There is nobody in the history of the game that can defend him in 1-on-1 situations, and his presence on the field instantly makes Tom Brady’s offense elite.
