New England Patriots Kick-Off in 92 Days: Profiling No. 92 Malcom Brown

Opening day countdowns are great. So are player profiles. Here at Musket Fire, we decided to combine them and create a Week 1 countdown-oriented, jersey number-dictated player profile series. Yesterday, we looked at No. 93 Jabaal Sheard, and the day before that it was No. 94 Chris Jones. Because today marks 92 days until the New England Patriots open 2015, we are profiling No. 92, rookie defensive tackle Malcom Brown.

Notice that Brown has elected to take the No. 92 jersey, according to Oliver Thomas of 247Sports.

A mammoth at 6-foot-2, 319 pounds, Brown will surprise you with his athleticism. According to his scouting report, Brown uses his hands as well as any NFL defensive tackle.

The Patriots were extremely fortunate to have such a highly rated prospect fall into their lap at No. 32 in the 2015 NFL Draft. In addition to his talent, Brown brings versatility to the roster; he can play in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes.

Not even six weeks into his tenure as a Patriot, and Brown is already acting like a Patriot. After being formally introduced as the team’s first round pick at Gillette Stadium earlier this month, Brown used the word “work” 38 times in a press conference.

Despite being the only 21-year-old on the roster, Brown is extremely mature for his age, a self-described family man. Couple his work ethic with that maturity, and it’s clear that Brown is ready to play for the Patriots.

Patriots fans should be excited for the future of the defensive line, as Brown will join 2014 first rounder Dominique Easley on the interior.

As of right now, Brown hasn’t signed his rookie contract. But have no fear—last summer, Easley didn’t sign his rookie deal until late June.

Because there are 90 players on the roster, some jersey numbers temporarily have multiple owners. That is the case with the No. 92 jersey right now, as defensive end Jake Bequette had that number last season.

Bequette is reportedly trying out for tight end this summer, so his jersey number will likely change. That’s if he makes the team—the depth charts at defensive end and tight end are equally crowded. This is all to say that the No. 92 jersey is pretty much guaranteed to be in the possession of the rookie Brown in 2015.

In case you missed them, here are the profiles for No. 95 Chandler Jones, No. 96 Sealver Siliga, No. 97 Alan Branch, No. 98 Antonio Johnson and No. 99 Dominique Easley.

Check back on Musket Fire tomorrow morning as we celebrate 91 days until Patriots kick-off by profiling No. 91, rising star Jamie Collins.
