New England Patriots Show Weaknesses in win over Ravens

The New England Patriots defeated the Baltimore Ravens 35-31, but it was a sloppy win.

By the end of the game, Joe Flacco had thrown for 292 yards and four touchdowns, and Justin Forsett had rushed for 129 yards and he had a receiving touchdown. Plus, Steve Smith Sr. ran right past Darrelle Revis for his only touchdown of the game.

These stats are extremely concerning because they show that the Pat’s defense is vulnerable and that they can be scored on. Even the mighty Darrelle Revis, who has had a sensational year, could not stop the thirty-five year old Steve Smith Sr.

If Belichick is unable to solve the Patriots’ defensive woes that manifested during the AFC Divisional playoff game, then the Patriots could be in real trouble moving on in the playoffs. The Colts and the Broncos both have decent offenses that could exploit the New England defense that showed up against the Ravens, and the Patriots will not be able to win the Super Bowl with poor defensive play.

Another problem that reared its ugly head again this season was the Patriots lack of a running game. Brandon Bolden, Shane Vereen, and LeGarrette Blount combined for a total of fourteen rushing yards against the Ravens, and Jonas Gray did not play. Those are unacceptable stats, and the only reason the Patriots were able to win the AFC Divisional game was because Tom Brady put on another phenomenal playoff performance.

However, even with all of their flaws, New England was still able to beat the Ravens and advance to their fourth consecutive AFC Championship game. If the Patriots can hit their stride like they did towards the end of the regular season, then they can beat any team in the league and win the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl. If not, then they may be looking at a ten year Super Bowl drought, and another almost season.
