Stack Attack! Patriots Sign Donte Stallworth and Others
By Tim Dillon
Wow, the Patriots are out for blood this year! With the re-signing of WR Donte’ Stallworth, the Patriots have added their third WR via free agency within the past three days. Stallworth was a part of the fearsome offense that went 16-0 in 2007, so this addition of a receiver that is already used to the Patriots’s system and the arm of Tom Brady should add to the passing attack. The Patriots’ offense had little holes entering the off-season, with the glaring exception of a deep field receiver. With that issue addressed by signing Brandon Lloyd and now the addition of Stallworth, the Patriots are ready to fire on all cylinders this coming season. At this point, I can’t even imagine how their passing game could get even better. The signing of Stallworth, however, means a very likely departure for free-agent Deion Branch, and the disappointing Chad Ochocinco. I will always have a spot in my heart for Branch, he’s a true Patriot and I loved his return to the team. Ochocinco, on the other hand, I think I speak for the vast majority of Patriots fans when i say, “Please leave, you big waste of money.”
Other recent Patriots signings include the addition of DB Marquice Cole from the Jets. Cole is a versatile player who can also play at cornerback in sub packages. His addition, along with DE Trevor Scott, shows the Patriots are paying special attention to their defense. With the offense is already stacked, look for the Patriots to draft primarily defensive players early in the coming draft.
The Patriots have also signed TE Daniel Fells from the Broncos. Expect him to have a primarily blocking role, which will allow TE Aaron Hernandez to focus on the passing game. This addition of a third tight end will add depth and allow for “the Boston TE Party” to have some breathing room.
The Patriots have made a huge splash in free agency this off-season, and something tells me they aren’t quite done yet. I feel another big acquisition perhaps at the expense of one of our two first or second round picks. Regardless, it’s clear the Patriots are stacking their team this year and will look to squash the talk of a dynasty in decline. Watch out NFL, the Patriots are coming!
