Patriots/Jets Chatter

The battle for first place in the AFC East, and possibly the AFC as a whole, is certainly generating a ton of hype. With that, it’s generating plenty of chatter from the players and coaches (well, mostly one coach) in regards to the big Monday Night game. Here is a collection of some of the more notable quotes, and we’ll start with the NFL’s biggest loudmouth chatterbox, Jets’ Head Coach Rex Ryan:
“As much as I respect and admire Bill Belichick, I came here to kick his ass, and that’s the truth.”
“The first thing is I never realized how similar that I am to Tom Brady. The obvious physical appearance would be the first thing. The fact that he’s married to a super model, hello. Yes, I’m also married to a super model. I just happened to turn the page in InStyle magazine, page 329. I just realized that we are very similar that way.” (Rex Ryan’s wife modeled some Jets wear in InStyle magazine)
“There is no weakness in Brady’s game. He’s poised. He’s competitive. He’s a leader, and by the way, he can make every throw. He’s great underneath. He’s smart.”
“…I admire Bill Belichick. The reason is I think he’s the number one coach in this league. That’s undisputable. He’s smart. He gets his team every year. He’s a great evaluator of talent. I do admire him, as a son of a coach. Do I want to be like him? No, I want to be like myself, but I want to have the success that he’s had through the years. You like to compete against the best and that’s why I like going against him. I know it’s a huge challenge, but it’s something I try to give my best shot each time out and I know he gives us his best shot.”
Darrelle Revis, in response to a question asking if there are any slouches on this Patriots team. Last season and then reiterated this season, he called Randy Moss, then a member of the Patriots, a slouch.
“There are no slouches on the Patriots team. I do have a lot of respect for them. I like how they bring it every time we play them. You get nothing less than the A-plus game from those guys. … I know what type of game this is going to be. It’s going to be lights, camera, action from both teams on Monday night.”
Tom Brady
“Look, we’re 9-2. We haven’t accomplished anything. I’ve been a part of a team that won 16 games in the regular season. And I’ve been to five AFC Championship Games. These games that we’re playing, yeah, they’re important. But a lot of guys on our team have played in a hell of a lot bigger games than regular-season games. So, to me, what we’ve accomplished really is nothing to this point. … I’m trying to express to my teammates — who maybe it’s their first year or second year, they haven’t been a part of it — ‘Listen, we haven’t done anything. Literally nothing. Zero. Nine wins? Nine wins is nothing.’ Coach always says — and I said this last week — ‘Football season starts after Thanksgiving.’ It’s after Thanksgiving. Now we’re going to see what kind of football team we have. We’re going to see what other good football teams are, and what it takes to be a good football team.”
“Playing them for a fourth time (under Head Coach Rex Ryan), I definitely have a lot more confidence the fourth time playing them than I did the first time playing them. But at the same time we have to go play well. At the Meadowlands earlier this season, we had a decent first half and then we just came out in the second half as a team and really played poorly. They took advantage, as good teams do.”
Bill Belichick
“Hey, there is no love lost out there between those two teams. We both want to win. That’s what we’re here for — the Jets and the Patriots, both teams are walking out on the field to come out victorious. Is that a big news story? Is that something we didn’t know — the Jets want to win the game, the Patriots want to win?”
“(Rex Ryan)…is a good game plan coach and he’ll set up matchups for how he thinks is the best way to defend us. We won’t know exactly until game time, so we’ll have to be ready to adjust. Whatever happens, we know there will be some wrinkles on Monday Night. We’ll have to adjust one way or the other.”
