The Patriots’ 53-Man Roster, For Now…

facebooktwitterreddit

The final cuts are in and the Patriots’ 53-man roster is set, at least for the moment. There’s bound to be more moves with a whole new crop of free agents and players on waivers. The Pats are currently a little light at offensive line (8) and tight end (2), so expect some movement there. Also, with the somewhat surprising release of Brandon Meriweather, the Patriots could look for some veteran safety help via free agency or a trade. Do you think they’re regretting not re-signing Jarrad Page?

Here’s a look at the current 53-man roster:

Quarterbacks (3)

  • Tom Brady
  • Brian Hoyer
  • Ryan Mallett

Running Backs (4)

  • BenJarvus Green-Ellis
  • Danny Woodhead
  • Stevan Ridley
  • Shane Vereen

Kevin Faulk opens the season on the PUP list. Sammy Morris is a notable cut here.

Wide Receivers (6)

  • Wes Welker
  • Deion Branch
  • Chad Ochocinco
  • Taylor Price
  • Julien Edelman
  • Matthew Slater

Brandon Tate is a notable but not surprising cut.

Tight Ends (2)

  • Rob Gronkowski
  • Aaron Hernandez

What’s surprising here is that there are only two. With all of the multiple tight sets the Pats run, there’s bound to be an addition here.

Offensive Linemen (8)

  • Matt Light
  • Logan Mankins
  • Dan Koppen
  • Dan Connolly
  • Sebastian Vollmer
  • Nate Solder
  • Steve Maneri
  • Ryan Wendell
  • Rich Ohrnberger

Rookie Marcus Cannon starts the year on the non-football injury/PUP list. Rich Ohrnberger is placed on IR in a surprising move. I don’t recall him getting hurt. This is another area bound to see an addition or two.

Defensive Linemen (10)

  • Jermaine Cunningham
  • Vince Wilfork
  • Albert Hayneworth
  • Andre Carter
  • Shaun Ellis
  • Myron Pryor
  • Kyle Love
  • Gerard Warren
  • Mike Wright
  • Mark Anderson

Ron Brace and Brandon Deaderick start the season on the PUP list.

Linebackers (7)

  • Jerod Mayo
  • Brandon Spikes
  • Gary Guyton
  • Rob Ninkovich
  • Dane Fletcher
  • Tracy White
  • Jeff Tarpinian

Jeff Tarpinian is a surprising keep. He was hurt most of training camp and the preseason. You have to think that his roster spot is shakey as the Pats are bound to add to the tight end and/or offensive line positions.

Corners (6)

  • Devin McCourty
  • Leigh Bodden
  • Kyle Arrington
  • Ras-I Dowling
  • Antwaun Molden
  • Darius Butler

Pats carry an extra corner here. Molden has been in New England less than a week and he sticks. He, along with Butler, are among the roster spots that could be cut if the Pats look to add talent elsewhere.

Safeties (4)

  • Patrick Chung
  • Sergio Brown
  • Josh Barrett
  • James Ihedigbo

It will be interesting to see what happens here. This can’t be the safety roster heading into the season opener. I’m still perplexed as to why both Brandon Meriweather and James Sanders were cut.

Specialists (3)

  • Stephen Gostkowski
  • Zoltan Mesko
  • James Dearth
