New England Patriots: 3 dream trade ideas with the Dallas Cowboys in 2023

The Dallas Cowboys sit near the top of the list when thinking of dream trade scenarios for the Patriots with teams around the league.

Despite their lack of incredible success in recent years, the Cowboys' roster is full of quality talent that nearly all other teams would wish to have.

From offense to defense to even special teams, some players have been consistent playmakers in Dallas, which make it even more difficult to digest that the Patriots didn't get their hands on them first.

But that's why we can have dream trade ideas that aren't entirely out of the question from happening, even if they appear that away.

Micah Parsons - LB

Who wouldn't want to add another absolute beast of a pass rusher to the Patriots roster if they had the chance?

Just imagine a defensive line with Matthew Judon and Micah Parsons lining up across from an opposing quarterback. The fear that man would feel would be so satisfying for all those who love a good team run by its defense.

Parsons has been a menace on the field since being drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2021 draft. His performance earned him the Defensive Rookie of the Year award, on top of being selected to the Pro Bowl and earning First-Team All-Pro honors in both seasons.

But what did he do to be recognized?

Through two seasons, Parsons has totaled 106 combined tackles, 33 tackles for a loss, 56 quarterback hits, 26.5 sacks, and three fumble recoveries returned for 36 yards and a touchdown.

For such a young player, he has already accomplished what some would in an entire career, never mind just their first two years in the league.

Although the Cowboys' defense is not one to scoff at, adding Parsons to the Patriots' defense would instill the fear in opponents they have been lacking in recent years. As they hope to return to being a competitive team that runs through their defense, Parsons would be an essential addition to getting them there much sooner.

Trevon Diggs - CB

How can you say no to a young playmaking cornerback?

If the Patriots could accomplish this dream trade for Trevon Diggs, their secondary would likely be the best in the league. Although they may be close to that this upcoming season, with the addition of Christian Gonzalez and re-signing of Jonathan Jones, Diggs is a proven, productive player who will only get better as the years go on.

A second-round pick in the 2020 draft, Diggs has already achieved so much in just three seasons. On top of being selected to back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2021 and 2022, he also earned First-Team All-Pro honors in his second season.

How he has amassed so much success so early in his career is incredible, especially in a division that has seen the rise of the Philadelphia Eagles in recent years.

Since he signed with the Cowboys three years ago, Diggs has totaled 169 combined tackles, 17 interceptions returned for 195 yards and two touchdowns, with 49 passes defended, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

His sophomore season was the most impressive, as he led the league with 11 interceptions, returned for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Of course, he does have some work to do because, despite the incredible work in turning the ball over, he tends to allow receivers to get past him a lot, which is not a quality you want in a shutdown corner.

However, he's still young and has plenty of time to improve on his weaknesses, and where better to do that than in New England? At least in a dream trade scenario, of course.

Tony Pollard - RB

Most would argue the Patriots do not need another running back right now, especially with the season Rhamondre Stevenson is projected to have. But because of the question marks surrounding the younger backs behind him, Pierre Strong Jr. and Kevin Harris, there's a need to add another competent runner that would pair nicely with Stevenson.

And that's where Tony Pollard comes in.

The rise of Pollard in recent years is a significant reason why the Cowboys chose to move on from their former top-ranked running back, Ezekiel Elliott, earlier this year.

The 26-year-old has always been a great backup to Elliott since arriving in Dallas in 2019 but stepped up to the plate over the last two years when Elliott was down with injury or not performing to his usual standards.

Pollard really made a name for himself during the 2022 season, where he totaled 193 carries for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns on top of 39 receptions for 371 yards and three more scores. With the up-and-down year that Elliott was having, Pollard became the saving grace for Dak Prescott and the Cowboys' offense, who were very much in need of a genuine threat on the ground.

Because of his versatility and reliability at the position, adding him to the Patriots' offense would be a complete no-brainer. Imagining him and Stevenson dominating defenses on the ground and in the passing game is enough to want Bill Belichick actually to get this trade done.

The good thing is it may be unlikely to happen this season, even though this piece discusses trades for the 2023 season. But it is certainly possible next year, as Pollard will be a free agent in 2024.
