Like most of the teams under Bill Belichick over the last twenty-three years, the Patriots are projected to have a stellar defense again next season.

Most teams will have one or two players that stand out amongst the rest and make the most significant impact, but the most remarkable thing about New England's defense is the number of incredible performers who can contribute in each and every game.

There are certainly a few names that will repeat their phenomenal success over the last few years, and fortunately, a few other players will likely be on the rise during the 2023 season.

Make sure to watch out for these four players in particular next season.

Matthew Judon

Is this really a shock to anyone?

As the most dominating force on the Patriots' defense since signing with the team in 2021, Matthew Judon is expected to continue his record-breaking production this upcoming season.

In just two years in New England, the linebacker has totaled 28 sacks, 53 quarterback hits, 120 combined tackles, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. His performance in both seasons earned him selections to the Pro Bowl, and he even received two votes for Defensive Player of the Year for the 2022 season.

His influence on and off the field has had a lasting impact on his teammates, including Josh Uche, to who Judon has become a mentor to. Their work together in practice and Judon's decisions on the field ultimately helped Uche accomplish the best season of his career, totaling 11.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits, elevating him as another threat on the edge for opposing offenses.

Now that he has solidified his role as the go-to pass rusher on the team, it's almost unfathomable to believe Judon could be any better next season than he already has.

But with some new teammates expected to influence the defense's success, Judon's job may become a bit easier, allowing him to accomplish even more in 2023.

Marcus Jones

Given his incredible versatility, putting Marcus Jones into a singular role on offense, defense, or special teams is difficult. But since he's hoping to get back to his cornerback position, it seems fair to have him listed with other potential defensive MVPs.

Although it may be hard to believe after how he played last year, Jones is set to enter just his second season in the NFL this fall, and boy, does he have quite the foundation to launch from.

During his rookie season, there weren't many expectations for Jones in particular, especially since both he and Jack Jones were selected back-to-back in the draft earlier in the year. Neither were anticipated to become impactful players immediately, but Marcus soared once he was given the opportunity.

His most prominent role became the leading kick and punt returner, totaling just over 1,000 yards combined for the year. He certainly shined in that role, even securing a win over the Jets in week 11 with a return touchdown. But Bill Belichick was well aware of his flexibility and array of knowledge for the game of football, allowing him to utilize Jones on offense as well.

Jones was used sparingly throughout the year as a pass catcher for Mac Jones and had his most notable game in week 13 against the Bills when he scored his first receiving touchdown.

As if that weren't enough, he also made a mark on defense, nabbing two interceptions returned for 87 yards and a touchdown, demonstrating even more how brilliant of a player he really was.

Heading into this season, Jones' future is bright and limitless, considering his natural athleticism and skill. He will almost certainly be a leading candidate as a team MVP, not just defensively, but the team overall.

Kyle Dugger

One of the rising stars of the Patriots' defense, Kyle Dugger is expected to have an increased role this upcoming year, especially with the absence of longtime captain Devin McCourty.

Of course, he's not expected to fill McCourty's shoes, although he may be capable of doing so at some point in his career. But Dugger has set the bar high for himself as he continues to improve every season.

As one of the most versatile players on the team, Dugger's ability to be put into essentially any position within the secondary makes him an invaluable piece to the defense that makes opposing offenses uncomfortable. And in just three seasons in New England, he's already accomplished that.

His progression through these past three seasons is not something to overlook. Because he attended a Division II school and entered the league at 24, many fans and media members wrote him off before he stepped onto an NFL football field. Fortunately for the Patriots, he quickly made the doubters into fools, especially with his memorable performance last season.

Like several of his teammates, the 2022 season was one of if not the best, season of his career. Through 15 games, Dugger totaled 78 combined tackles, five tackles for a loss, three interceptions returned for 55 yards and two touchdowns, eight passes defended, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown, as well.

Now that he's earned his veteran stripes, seeing how Belichick uses him in every game and how his influence will help the younger members on the defensive roster will be intriguing.

Regardless of where he lines up or who he's poised to cover, we know that Dugger will put it all on the field and be one of the most impactful players on the roster.

Jabrill Peppers

Another player who has earned himself a favorable reputation in New England has to be Jabrill Peppers.

Coming into his first season with the Patriots, there were doubts about how well he would perform since he was still recovering from a torn ACL and surgery to repair it from the season before. But his intensity and versatility shined right away, despite what his statistics will tell you.

As a prototype player Belichick loves, Peppers can be used on defense and special teams and made an impact with both units last season.

One of the most memorable aspects of his game last year was his hard-hitting tackles that led to big plays in important games.

In the first meeting with the New York Jets in week eight, Peppers' intense play style could be seen and heard during punt returns but especially one in the third quarter. He was also a part of the iconic punt return touchdown by Marcus Jones in the second game of the season against the Jets, becoming a brick wall to Jets players trying to stop the play.

He had a similar play against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week two, but this time on defense. With his attention to detail, as a play was being set up, Peppers took down the Steelers' receiver right as he caught the ball, keeping him behind the line of scrimmage to force a fourth down.

Now entering his second season fresh on the heels of a contract extension, his performance through the offseason has caught the attention of his head coach, who couldn't stop raving about how improved he's become in just one year's time.

If that's any indication of what's to come this season, it seems completely fair to believe Peppers could become a secret weapon on defense and a potential team MVP at the end of the year.
