Patriots: 3 players that would tremendously benefit from Julio Jones trade
By Mike Luciano
1. QB Cam Newton
The Patriots have the succession plan all lined up in Mac Jones, but they are committed to Cam as the starter to kick off 2021. While his numbers last year look ugly at face value, one has to consider the fact that he was recovering from COVID-19 and dealing with a brand new offense and no preseason.
Newton’s help on the field was substandard, as he was throwing to the likes of Damiere Byrd, N’Keal Harry, and Jakobi Meyers as his primary options. Does that sound like a good situation in this age of speed and receivers?
Cam Newton would love to have Julio Jones on the Patriots. Is the feeling mutual?
Jones would immediately be the best receiver Newton has ever played with, beating out Steve Smith during his first years in Carolina. The soon-to-be-ex-Falcon might’ve been injured last year, but he looked like the same dominant receiver when he was healthy, and that could help the Patriots get over the hump.
New England is in a division with a Jets team that has a bright future ahead of them, an improved Dolphins squad that was one win away from the postseason last year, and a Bills team ready to run the AFC East for years. They need an X-factor like Jones to set themselves apart.
