What is Patriots WR Julian Edelman hinting at here?
Though we’ve speculated countless times that New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman could be traded or even retire this offseason, that doesn’t mean either of those outcomes won’t hit us like a ton of bricks if they were to happen.
The last thing we need? Being teased about the possibility of one of those scenarios. And that’s exactly what we got on Tuesday night.
For some odd reason, Edelman sent out a cryptic tweet that seemed to have hinted at retirement and fans are losing it. And he quote tweeted something from “New England Patriots Fans of Dallas”? Seriously, what’s going on?
The season ended a little over a week ago. How could he possibly know he’s ready to retire (if that’s what this message means)? We know injuries heavily weighed on him in 2020, but he can’t go out like that, right? Despite a career performance in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, Edelman played in just six games this past season and hardly made an impact.
We remember what happened when Rob Gronkowski called it quits because he couldn’t deal with injuries anymore. He sat out a year and then went to join Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. Some fans are worried Edelman could head to the Bucs based on this message.
Has Bill Belichick decided this is the end of the road after Edelman shared a story about running into his naked head coach in a hot tub after hours at Gillette Stadium? Or maybe the Pats want to clear some cap space? Perhaps it’s going to be a complete tear-down this offseason and the team is going to start fresh? We have no idea.
But in all seriousness, the prospect of Edelman retiring is very real. Despite a career year in 2019, he’ll be 35 years old soon and is likely hurting from constantly battling injuries (or at least that’s what it feels like) as he continues to age in the NFL. And without Brady or any real quarterback solution for 2021, what’s the point of risking things further?
Yeah, things could get sad a lot sooner than we expected.
