According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Washington Redskins free agent tight end Fred Davis had dinner with several high-ranking members of the Buffalo Bills organization in Washington. Among those influential people were new head coach Doug Marrone, assistant General Manager Doug Whaley, and current GM Buddy Nix.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Fred Davis is clearly the best free agent available at this juncture, but the only two teams who showed interest in signing Davis prior to the report of this dinner were the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns. Chalk up the Bills as a team definitely interest, and they have a really good chance at signing Davis despite being very quiet up until this “loud” moment.

The 27-year-old USC product is, per CSN Washington, ahead of schedule in his rehab following Achilles’ surgery, so that’s great news as teams are wary of his ability to produce following the injury. The Redskins know Davis’s progress better than anyone, but they are still going to be rigid on their asking price. They want to keep Davis in Washington, but they aren’t going to overpay for him.

The Bills have a severely injured tight end of their own in Scott Chandler, who had another solid season in 2012 and is a huge mismatch for teams in the red zone (he is killer against the New England Patriots and their linebackers in coverage). However, Chandler tore his ACL, and some believe his future outlook is bleak as he wasn’t exactly explosive to begin with.

Either way, the Bills don’t have a certain tight end situation, and Davis would be an upgrade anyway. Having a TE pairing of Fred Davis and Scott Chandler would be huge for a team looking for a new quarterback (they have worked out seemingly every QB in this draft), because tight ends are a young quarterback’s best friend.

Despite having very little salary cap space, the Washington Redskins are still after New England Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib and reportedly view him as the free agent they want to sign at the cornerback position. Redskins Washington Examiner beat writer John Keim tweeted his agreement with The Fan’s Greg Paulsen, who stated that the Redskins view Talib as their top target at the cornerback position.

David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

The issue for the Redskins is definitely cash, because they are just $600,000 under the salary cap, so that would mean Bruce Allen would have to cut some more players in order to bring in the CB he drafted out of Kansas while the GM of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Redskins could make it happen, and they have the guts- and big need at corner- to make the move. They also have other Tampa Bay connections, as defensive backs coach Raheem Morris was Talib’s head coach in Tampa. Also, Redskins safety Tanard Jackson was a teammate of Talib’s down south.

The USA Today was the first to report that the Redskins would “make a push” for Talib, after wisely cutting horrendous veteran DeAngelo Hall. Talib would be a huge upgrade for the Redskins, but their financial issues will make a deal extremely difficult.

Talib is slated to make a great deal of money this offseason, and there will be other teams pressing for his services. The New England Patriots really want to get him back as quickly as possible, and he is their top target at the position. I think the Pats are in the best position to keep Talib, but it’s going to be an interesting offseason story for sure.

This is some very interesting news and specifically bad news for New England Patriots fans. The news about Aqib Talib has been very quiet as of late, but that is all about to change. Talib has been in contact with the Patriots about re-signing since the end of the season, but neither side has been able to work out a deal. With the market now open for business, it looks like Talib might end up with one of the Patriots’ arch-rivals: the Colts. Former Colts general manager Bill Polian was asked about some possible Colts moves and immediately jumped to Talib as a possible free-agent splash. Given that he’s about a year removed from heading that organization, it seems pretty likely that Polian has some insight about a potential deal. There is nothing being reported in terms of a contract just yet, but a cryptic tweet from Colts owner Jim Irsay, which was the basis of the question to Polian, does raise some eyebrows about the possibility. https://twitter.com/JimIrsay/status/311580781300576256
Also, Mark Maske of the Washington Post reported Tuesday night that the Redskins remain in the running for Aqib Talib, but may not have the money to get a deal done. According to Maske a person with knowledge of the Redskins’ situation said it still appears that the team will have a difficult time fitting a contract for Talib beneath the salary cap. That person said the Redskins would like to sign Talib but “do not have enough cash.”
