New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis continues to be a hot topic this offseason, as fans and teams alike are wondering if the Jets will deal Revis. It seems like the Jets are willing to deal Revis if it will help the team in the long run, but they will certainly be cautious about it and look for the best deal possible. If there are no deals that are up to their standard, then the Jets will just keep their star.

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

An agent told ESPN New York that there is no chance of Darrelle Revis getting traded before the 2013 NFL Draft. The agent also told Rich Cimini that no team will be willing to give Revis $16 million per year, because he is a cornerback (it might also be because he is coming off of a serious injury). Revis is a great player, but it does look like he is overvaluing himself. The highest-paid defensive player in the league is also making $16 million per year, and he also plays in the AFC East. That man? Last year’s big free agent signing; Mario Williams of the Buffalo Bills.

The reason why there is “not a chance” of Revis getting dealt before the draft is due to the lack of cap space around the league. The flat cap has made it difficult for many teams, but teams like the New England Patriots that planned ahead for this are looking good.

The New York Jets won’t be re-signing starting running back Shonn Greene due to their cap issues, but he will be an attractive free agent catch for teams in need of a running back. According to Cimini (same piece), Greene is expected to “draw interest” from the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons; both teams in need of another RB.

The New York Giants decided to move forward with future second-year running back David Wilson as their starter when they released Ahmad Bradshaw and cleared $2.75 million in cap space in the process. The Giants have several other free agent decisions to make, as well as contract extensions looming for the superstar wide receiver duo of Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz.

Dec 30, 2012; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw (44) breaks off big run against the Philadelphia Eagles during the second half at MetLife Stadium. New York Giants defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 42-7. Mandatory Credit: Jim O

Bradshaw could still stay in in New York, because he told NFL AM today that he is “thinking” about signing with the New York Jets. One of the reasons for that train of thought is because the Jets are “just right across the street from where I am now”.

Gregg Rosenthal believes that the Jets “also make some sense”.

Ahmad Bradshaw is the best running back on the open market for sure, and none of the impending free agents will top him either. Bradshaw’s only legitimate concern is health, because he is a fantastic running back overall. He’s the true meaning of a “feature” back as far as talent goes, because Bradshaw is an efficient, talented rusher who can beat you inside or outside, he can make an impact as a receiver out of the backfield, and he’s one of the best blocking running backs in the NFL today.

The Jets will most likely be more of a passing team now that Marty Mornhinweg has taken over for Tony Sparano as the offensive coordinator, but running back is still a need for the Jets. Their cap situations is terrible, though, so that is a definite hitch in a prospective Bradshaw-Jets move. But the Jets will almost certainly allow Shonn Greene to go, and I don’t think they’ll love rolling with an RBBC of Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight next season.

There is still a chance that Bradshaw re-signs with the Giants, and he hasn’t ruled out that possibility either. However, it doesn’t seem like their is space for Bradshaw’s talents with the Giants, because the Giants seem content to use the explosive Wilson and Andre Brown in their backfield.

I doubt the Jets will sign Bradshaw, even if it makes sense from a personnel standpoint. It doesn’t make sense for John Idzik and the Jets from a financial standpoint, because running back is a position that is relatively easy to replace. The Jets can just draft a back to add to their RBBC and possibly make them the leader of it, because that’s the cheapest option for this team. The Jets are in rebuilding mode, and RB is not the first position a team rebuilds.

Let’s take a quick look at the rivals, shall we? Rich Cimini at ESPN New York is doing a positional review series where he takes a look at the New York Jets by each positional grouping, and there are some interesting notes for New England Patriots fans to glean from the quarterback and running back positions.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Cimini wrote that Matt Moore, Matt Flynn, and Tarvaris Jackson are the three most likely options, because he believes that Alex Smith “probably will be too rich for the Jets’ blood”. I think the Jets need to save their draft picks (their building blocks for the future) and instead focus on signing what Cimini dubs a “cost-effective veteran”. The perfect example of this is former Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore, who enjoyed a solid 2011 campaign in Miami and is an underrated, cheap veteran who is a capable starter in this league. He was ranked just outside of PFF’s top ten among QBs in 2011 (per their advanced player grades).

Although there is an obvious connection between John Idzik and Flynn and Jackson from the Seattle Seahawks, only Flynn is a legitimate option. Jackson is clearly not a starting caliber quarterback in this league, and I think it’s more likely that the Jets sign Moore than trade after the more expensive Flynn. But he is most likely the better option from a playing value perspective, so Flynn and Moore are certainly two plausible options.

I agree that Smith is out of the Jets price range, because the San Francisco 49ers will likely command a high price for him (as they should). It’s easy to forget that Smith had a 70.3 completion percentage this season and is an extremely accurate QB. He would be a great fit for Marty Mornhinweg’s new offensive system in New York, but the Jets will need to go with the cheapest option due to their disastrous cap situation.

Cimini’s assessment of the Jets running back position is blunt when it comes to Shonn Greene‘s future, and he wrote that , “Greene is as good as gone.” With the Jets in severe cap problems and Greene coming off of a season in which he averaged just 3.8 yards per carry, it’s better to let Greene be and allow him to sign a slightly bloated contract with another team this offseason.

Greene will still be one of the best available free agent backs this spring, so there will be interest there. The Jets need to get a more explosive backfield option to throw in the RBBC that will contain Joe McKnight and Bilal Powell. If the Jets weren’t in such a cap mess, then Greene would have probably stayed. But the best way to go is for the Jets to draft a mid-round RB who brings something different to the table.
