The 2013 NFL Scouting Combine kick off officially starts today with intensive coverage of the much anticipated event provided by the NFL Network.

Over 330 NFL prospects start their journey in the pursuit to become the next NFL’s top player in the league. For us, fans, it’s time to go window-shopping for the next player that represents a chance for our team to be a Super Bowl contender and possible winner.

Feb 28, 2012; Indianapolis, IN, USA; LSU Tigers defensive back Morris Claiborne does the vertical jump during the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.
To take care of business, NFL Network and NFL.com will be featuring an unparalleled 24-man roster of talent to cover the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine, together with NFL Draft experts Mike Mayock and Charles Davis. Also, former NFL head coaches Steve Mariucci and Brian Billick will weigh in their expertise – just to name a few.

Among the entire top-quality analyst in the field, one name is very familiar, and that is former VP of Player Personnel for the New England Patriots and former General Manager for the Kansas City Chiefs – Scott Pioli.

Along with head coach Bill Belichick, Scott Pioli was the “brain, heart and soul” of the Patriots organization serving as Director and later as Vice President of Player Personnel from 2001 to 2008. He was the guy behind the scene in the pursuit of building the perfect team recognized by his ability to build a team; not just collecting individual talents. After his departure with the Patriots, his position was divided among four employees.

After an unsuccessful four years with the Chiefs organization for not bringing in a top-quality quarterback and head coach, Pioli found himself on the market. Instead of joining any other team in the league, Pioli went for a contract with SiriusXM NFL Radio, FoxSports.com reported.

Starting today in this week’s NFL Scouting Combine, Pioli will also share his expertise, in-depth analysis, and perspective into the Combine process from recent front office executives leading up to the draft.

It will be interesting to see if there is any possibility of Pioli returning to New England in 2014. Possibilities are highly doubtful, but he was the guy that worked with Bill Belichick in building the perfect team, winning three Super Bowls, and completing a perfect 16-0 season. Maybe Pioli was the “12th man” on the field and the “54th man” on the roster.

The New York Jets thorough search for a new GM continues, and Jason La Canfora is reporting that the Jets will interview Green Bay Packers executive John Dorsey this weekend. The NFL insider adds that Dorsey has a “strong shot” at becoming a GM after Andy Reid went to the Kansas City Chiefs, as it is rumored that the two will team up in Kansas City.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets are focusing on some of the top names on the market right now in San Francisco’s Tom Gamble, Marc Ross of the New York Giants, Atlanta’s David Caldwell, Cleveland’s veteran GM Tom Heckert, and they could even promote one of their own in exec Scott Cohen.

There are plenty of possibilities for the Jets, but the question is whether or not they can nab their preferred candidate by selling this team to them. With Gamble being such a hot name on the open market (the Browns, Chargers, and Jaguars have shown interest), it might be more difficult to grab the New York native.

Dorsey was promoted by the Packers this spring to the role of “director of football operations”, but it seems unlikely that he picks the Jets due to the connection with Andy Reid. If things do indeed fall in place for Reid and the Chiefs, then Scott Pioli will be on his way out and Dorsey on his way into K.C.

Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has stated that he would like to give the new head coach the final say over all team personnel decisions, which is certainly an attractive bargaining chip for prospective candidates. Oregon Ducks head coach Chip Kelly stated that he would need to have almost complete control over personnel decisions, so the Browns could be an attractive landing spot for Kelly. Not many teams are willing to offer that, especially to an unproven head coach with no real NFL experience, so that’s something to keep an eye on.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Nate Ulrich tweeted that Haslam “thinks this is a very attractive job”.

The Browns are likely headed after a big name guy or somebody with high risk, high reward like Chip Kelly. It will be interesting to see which route they prefer, and Haslam has stated that he wants to hire a head coach to replace Pat Shurmur before bringing on a GM. That’s not a conventional approach, and it’s a quizzical one for Haslam to make when building a team.

This all makes it even more unlikely that Josh McDaniels will leave the New England Patriots, which is excellent news for Pats fans. He is happy in New England, and those rumors are coming to a screeching halt.

The Kansas City Chiefs have not officially made any moves on GM Scott Pioli, as owner Clark Hunt is still mulling over the former New England Patriots exec’s future with the Chiefs after firing another former Patriot in head coach Romeo Crennel. The Chiefs are probably looking for a big-name GM, and I doubt Pioli ends up keeping his job. I mean, Hunt can’t possibly keep him after all that’s happened this year and after firing Crennel.
