Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton is one of the hottest head coaching candidates in the league right now- and for good reason. Under Horton, the Cardinals defense has become one of the best in the league, but the team is in dire straits due to poor personnel decisions on offense (especially at quarterback). The two men responsible, Ken Whisenhunt and Rod Graves, were fired by the team yesterday.

Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Bills didn’t fire both their head coach and GM, but Buddy Nix could be on his way out in the future. That remains to be decided, but we do know for sure that the Bills will have to fill their head coaching vacancy left by the fired Chan Gailey. According to a report from Jason La Canfora, the Bills, Browns, and Cardinals will all interview Horton.

That means the top defensive coordinator could stay in Arizona, and they will likely move up Steve Keim as the head man if they end up promoting Horton up a notch.

There is one thing that intrigues me about this situation from the Bills perspective (well, two actually), and the first deals with Nix. He’s not fired yet, but the sign that things are unclear is the fact that Russ Brandon- not Nix- is the one setting up the head coaching interviews for Buffalo.

The other note that interests me is Dave Wannstedt. His defense in Buffalo has underperformed year-in and year-out, despite the fact that there is talent in the front seven and, especially, at the safety position. Horton is a much better defensive guru, and the disappointment caused during Wannstedt’s tenure as the Bills DC means that he should definitely be fired. The Bills need to clean house, and I think adding a strong offensive coordinator would benefit them. They could feasibly keep Wannstedt and basically have Horton control him, but we’ll see what Ralph Wilson’s plan is for the organization.

After firing General Manager Rod Graves following a 5-11 season, the Arizona Cardinals have fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt. This signifies a total rebuild for the Cards, and they will almost certainly draft a new quarterback in April. They could feasibly keep Kevin Kolb, and it could work out nicely for them if they want to see if they can make the investment pay off. But the GM who made that mistake is now gone, so it seems impossible for them to keep Kolb.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Graves has left the team with enormous needs on offense, as the Cardinals have the worst pass protection in the NFL. That’s the main reason why the quarterbacks have had such a difficult time producing, in addition to the fact that Ryan Lindley and John Skelton should never be given the opportunity to start for an NFL franchise (especially Lindley). I blame Whisenhunt a little bit for making the QB situation worse by initially trying to start Skelton.

The running back situation in Arizona is also dire, because both Ryan Williams and Beanie Wells were so awful that they averaged under three yards per carry. The offensive line is poor, but you can’t blame them for those putrid numbers. LaRod Stephens-Howling didn’t fair out much better, but at least he averaged over three yards per carry and provided some big-play spark once the Cardinals finally started to use him.

Once Graves went (he deserved to go), it was only a matter of time before Whisenhunt was fired. The head coaches just keep on dropping, as Whisenhunt becomes the seventh coach on Black Monday to receive the pink slip. I don’t think we’re done just yet, though.

This is news that doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone. The Arizona Cardinals have finally parted ways with subpar General Manager Rod Graves, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt could be the next one to go after an awful 2012 season for this franchise. Graves is the main man at fault for the Cards struggles, because he has done a poor job assembling this offense. He has failed to support his move to sign Kevin Kolb to a big contract, and it has nothing to do with Kolb himself. It’s the fact that the supporting cast is only suitable for an elite quarterback to succeed with.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals offensive line is a mess, especially at both tackle positions. They have the worst pass blocking offensive line in the league, and Graves has also made plenty of mistakes as far as talent evaluation goes at the running back position. Whisenhunt should also be at fault for mis-managing carries as well, but most of the blame must be shouldered by the GM for inadequate talent at Whisenhunt’s disposal. Now I am no fan of Whisenhunt as a coach and believe he is overrated by some, so his firing his also warranted. However, it isn’t imminent nor is it completely deserved on his fault.

Reports have swirled that both head coach and GM could go, and that usually happens. I think there is a more of a chance that we see Whisenhunt out on the market again instead of back with the Cardinals, but anything can happen. The Cards have already made their decision on Rod Graves, and now it’s time to see if they deem Whisenhunt worthy of another chance.

This is what happens when you fail to sign a franchise quarterback or have an adequate backup plan in place. The best move for Arizona is to get rid of Whisenhunt as well, because he overvalued John Skelton by naming him the starter over Kolb. Now Kolb may not be the best QB around, but he’s hardly terrible and actually did a good job leading this team to wins early in the season. The main problems for this team are on the O-line and in the running back (aside from the questions at QB), and those problems were caused by Graves.
