Norv Turner didn’t have the best of runs with the San Diego Chargers and all but pointed the finger at former GM A.J. Smith for the poor performances of the team, but Turner is a good offensive guru and a highly sought-after offensive coordinator candidate. The New York Jets could fire a former head coach (Miami Dolphins) in Tony Sparano from their offensive coordinator position, and the Sparano hiring this offseason was a disaster from the start.

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

I could get into how Sparano’s complacent coaching on offense just doesn’t work anymore in the NFL, but I would rather focus on the report from ESPN New York that states that New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan wants to hire Norv Turner as the team’s new offensive coordinator.

The Jets offense featured the only running back in the NFL to run for over 1,000 rushing yards with an average of under four yards per carry in Shonn Greene. The article on ESPN New York notes that no decision has been made on Sparano yet, but I would be surprised if the uncreative coordinator manages to keep his job. Say what you want about Turner, but he is clearly an upgrade over Sparano.

Not all of the offense’s struggles can be put on Sparano, though, because Mike Tannenbaum and the Jets failed to provide the offense with capable players. In fact, Dustin Keller and Jeremy Kerley were the only two consistent players at the skill position. Still, Sparano is an awful play-caller, is far too conservative, and there is a reason why the Dolphins fired him and went after a different offensive guru in former Green Bay Packers OC Joe Philbin.

Not only is Bruce Arians a prime candidate for NFL Coach of the Year, but he is also a prime candidate for the San Diego Chargers head coaching gig. The Chargers fired General Manager A.J. Smith and head coach Norv Turner, and they could be adding Arians to help usher in the new era of Chargers football.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

In his report, Kevin Acee stated that Bruce Arians is the only coach being significantly discussed internally, while Ken Whisenhunt is also interested in the Chargers gig. He was recently let go by the Arizona Cardinals, and the Cards also cleaned house by firing both their GM and head man.

Arians is the offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, but he has been the interim head coach in the absence of head coach Chuck Pagano due to leukemia. He has gotten better now, and both Arians and Pagano have done an incredible job throughout the ordeal in taking the Colts to the playoffs.

Arians could soon be rewarded with a head coaching gig after previously being the leader of the Pittsburgh Steelers offense before 2012. Ken Whisenhunt seems like an attractive name with a Steelers pedigree, but the problem with Whisenhunt is that he is too much like Norv Turner. Whisenhunt is as stubborn as they come. It’s why he insists on playing certain players- like John Skelton- when there are better options on the table.

Greg Knapp’s reunion with the Oakland Raiders was short lived, and the Raiders offensive coordinator has been fired after just one additional season with the team, per my favorite insider Ian Rappoport. The Raiders made another unsurprising firing, as Linebackers Coach Johnny Holland has also been relieved of his duties in Oakland.

Kirby Lee/Image of Sport-USA TODAY Sports

Knapp did a putrid job as the offensive coordinator of the Raiders last season in leading a 4-12 team and one of the worst offenses in the NFL. He made Dennis Allen look awful in his first year as a head coach, and his scheme blocking completely messed up Darren McFadden. Knapp, at least to me from the outside, seemed a little too stubborn as far as changing the scheme goes for his own good. It was either going to be Knapp being fired from the Oakland Raiders or star running back Darren McFadden would leave the team. I would also take a starting RB over a poor OC any day of the week. Especially on Black Monday.

The Raiders were 21st in the league with just 300 first downs, averaged a poor 3.8 yards per carry on the ground, and they threw the ball far too often and put too much pressure on Carson Palmer‘s veteran- and tiring- arm. None of that brings success, and the Raiders were actually fairly average as a passing offense due to Palmer. Knapp wasn’t a complete failure, but he did fail to bring some semblance of consistency with the running game and focused far too much on throwing the ball. You need balance to be successful on offense, and the Raiders 4-12 record shows that they weren’t exactly successful.

The Raiders offense digressed from last season, and Knapp’s insane stubborness in keeping the zone-blocking scheme and not wanting to run the football is a big reason why. Good riddance for the Raiders, I say.

Now who replaces Knapp? Does Norv Turner stay in the division and go to a rival to call plays on offense and stick it to the San Diego Chargers? That would give the Raiders a head coach and two coordinators who used to coach for rival teams.
