Alabama Crimson Tide standout right tackle D.J. Fluker will most likely hear his name called in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and he will likely be picked between the 20th and 30th picks in the draft. Fluker has shown that he really wants to play at tackle in the pros by losing some weight, but Fluker is definitely a run blocking right tackle at the pro level given his size and significant struggles against speedy edge rushers.

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

According to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, Fluker met with four teams in the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, and Minnesota Vikings. All four of these teams could use the talented Alabama product either at tackle or guard, and they will likely try to play Fluker at tackle first and then go from there. For some reason, Fluker reminds me of current Patriots RT Marcus Cannon, whom the Pats are currently high on.

I doubt the Patriots draft Fluker, but I have stated a couple of times that they will likely show some interest. They are showing some interest right now after meeting with him, but the Ravens seem like a more likely landing spot for Fluker. The Ravens could use the big tackle to help bolster their run blocking, and they could even slot him inside.

The Carolina Panthers have the biggest need for an offensive lineman, and D.J. Fluker’s best fit is actually with the Panthers. Their situation at guard is horrendous, and starting right tackle Byron Bell has shown absolutely nothing in his first two years. Even if Fluker can’t protect the passer well at tackle, he can’t be as bad as Bell.

There is plenty of 2013 NFL Draft news to go around, and a look at several prospects is what is mainly featured in this New England Patriots Rundown issue.

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

1. D.J.Swearinger out of South Carolina is a safety that I’ve been touting for the last couple of months, and he’s starting to attract more buzz among NFL Draft analysts due to comments they’ve been hearing from NFL scouts. Swearinger held the distinction of being the most underrated SEC player heading into the draft (or, at least that’s what it seemed like), because nobody really talked about the electrifying strong safety. Swearinger has enough talent to be a top 50 pick, and he would be a steal for the Patriots in the late second-round if they chose to go that route.

Daniel Jeremiah asked two NFL execs about which safety was their favorite to watch, and both guys said Swearinger over more well-known names like Kenny Vaccaro, Matt Elam, and Eric Reid. The two praised Swearinger’s instincts and electrifying hitting ability. Swearinger is an explosive, impact player in the secondary, and those are traits that are key at SS. He’s also adept in coverage, and I have no idea why people only rate him as a third-rounder.

2. Percy Harvin is a favorite wide receiver target for New England Patriots fans in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, but I just don’t see it happening. Harvin reportedly wants $12 million per year, which would make him the third-highest paid wide receiver in the game. Does he really think he’s the third-best WR in the game? Harvin will also want a lengthy deal, and if you are making the argument that the Pats should not sign Wes Welker based on money, then you had better not trump up Harvin. Not only is he going to be expensive financially, but it will also take plenty of assets to pry Harvin from the Vikings. It’s just far too much money to give up, and it is nearly impossible to envision him playing for the Patriots.

3. ESPN’s scout Kevin Weidl is one of my favorite draft scouts out there, so when he praises Missouri Southern State’s NT Brandon Williams, then I am all ears. Williams has ridiculous size at 340 pounds and had a nice Senior Bowl, so there is definitely something to this guy despite him coming from a small school. Weidl said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Williams get selected with one of the top 40 picks because of his explosiveness, power, and athleticism. NEPD’s Mike Loyko tweeted back to him praising Williams’s character.

4. Speaking of NE Patriots Draft, here is another well-written up scouting report from them on Zach Ertz of Stanford. The tight end isn’t a New England Patriots target, but I still think you’ll find their evaluation of Ertz interesting. They wrote that he has a chance to sneak in as a back-end of the first-round selection and could be the best TE in this class.

5. Weidl’s “advanced scouting” series on ESPN Boston is just awesome, because Weidl goes in-depth with scouting notes on several top New England Patriots 2013 NFL Draft prospects. His most recent piece was on Alabama’s Jesse Williams, who is a possible selection for the Pats at the end of the first-round. Williams is one of the standouts in a deep class of DTs, and he is a scheme-versatile player. However, Williams is more of a run-stopper than pass rusher on the inside and might not be the best fit for the Patriots.

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

1. The New England Patriots got a steal in the 2010 NFL Draft when they selected Florida Gators star middle linebacker Brandon Spikes with the 62nd pick. After showing flashes in his first two seasons but unable to stay healthy and consistent, Spikes turned the corner in 2012 and was healthy for almost the entire season. Spikes is a catalyst for this defense, and he is one of the best run-stopping linebackers in the NFL today. When you watch him, it’s just incredible how strong he is, how explosive he is, how vicious he is, and how fast he gets downhill to stop the run.

Even though Spikes is a terrible coverage linebacker, I’ll definitely take the bad with the good. NE Patriots Draft continues their series where they re-grade past Patriots picks, and Dan Hope gave the selection of Spikes an “A-”.

2. Percy Harvin has always been whispered around by Patriots fans in rumors and speculation as a possible trade candidate for this team. Those whispers have become open discussion in Patriots Nation, and Harvin has become quite the NFL news topic now that the Minnesota Vikings sound more open to dealing him. They obviously aren’t just going to give him away or anything, and they will command a large fee for Harvin’s services. He has plenty of value to this team and is one of the league’s premier playmakers. If the Patriots were able to pry him away (they would likely need to give some 2014 picks in there as well), then he would be an enormous weapon. I’d rather have the Pats gauge Wes Welker‘s interest in re-signing first before giving a king’s ransom for Harvin, but there’s little doubt that Harvin is the better player (when you factor in age).

Rotoworld speculates that a deal between the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings involving Percy Harvin and Matt Flynn could work, and they toss out Flynn and a second-rounder for Harvin as a potential deal. It sounds like the Vikes are content to roll with Christian Ponder going forward, so they might actually want picks instead of Flynn. But that’s an interesting thought.

3. Former New England Patriots beat guy Ian Rapoport said that Joe Flacco’s ambitious agent Joe Linta and the Baltimore Ravens do not have any talks scheduled. Flacco wants to be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL after rejecting a top five contract last season, and let’s just say that I’m not a fan of the idea of him making more than Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers (just to name three). I highly doubt Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome is either, and this is a contract discussion that has ramifications for other key members of the Ravens, especially WR Anquan Boldin.

4. Kevin Weidl is one of my favorite college scouts, and he has done some in-depth reports on New England Patriots prospects for ESPN Boston. Yesterday, he took to Twitter to discuss Purdue cornerback Josh Johnson’s game tape against Notre Dame which he called “strong” due to Johnson’s instincts, toughness, and fluidity. Weidl did note his concern for Johnson’s size, as he is just 5’11″, 195 pounds. But he plays tough, and some believe he is worth a fifth-round pick.

5. Former New England Patriots wide receiver David Patten was hired as a coach for West Carolina, where he will also finish up his degree. This is great news for Patriots fans, and I wish the best of luck for Patten in his future with West Carolina. Great hire for the Catamounts.
