The Miami Dolphins have one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the NFL on their roster in Matt Moore, and they really want to keep him. According to the Palm Beach Post, Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman called Moore last week five times. Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland has also been pressing hard for Moore to stay.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Post writes that it is possible for Moore to stay in Miami, and they note that Moore is friends with current starter Ryan Tannehill. Unless if Moore wants to be a backup or really loves the situation he has with the Dolphins and in Miami, then I just can’t see him staying. Moore showed two seasons ago that he can be a legitimate starter in this league, because he was the Pro Football Focus’s 12th-ranked quarterback.

It wasn’t an anomaly either, because Moore did shows flashes of talent with the Carolina Panthers when he first started as a quarterback in this league. Moore does a good job of challenging defenses deep, and he has the most underrated deep ball in the game today. He is easily one of the best ten quarterbacks in the league on throws over twenty yards, and I think he could start for several teams in need of a quarterback.

Two of those teams are the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, and I bet the Dolphins would hate to see him sign in the AFC East with the Jets. He would be an upgrade over the starters at both teams, and at the very least would press Mark Sanchez and Brandon Weeden for the starting gigs in New York and Cleveland respectively.

Weather could be a factor, though, as the Palm Beach Post writes that Moore doesn’t want to play in Cleveland due to the cold. The paper also notes that Moore wants to play close to his home in southern California, and the geographical dots connect to the Arizona Cardinals, but Bruce Arians wants to bring Drew Stanton with him from the Indianapolis Colts, per reports. Stanton is a quality backup, but he is far too inaccurate to be a starter in this league. Moore would make a lot of sense for the Cardinals, because his ability to throw it deep fits what Arians values in quarterbacks in his offensive scheme.

David Garrard’s injury has made him pretty much a non-factor in the Dolphins quarterback situation at this point, so it’s between Tannehill and veteran Matt Moore. While Tannehill has looked fantastic and poised so far this preseason, Moore has been subpar and has been outplayed by the rookie so far in training camp.

New Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin has taken notice, and Tannehill has a big chance to impress tonight against another NFC South foe in the Carolina Panthers. He had a big game in the team’s preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Dolphins lost, but Tannehill was terrific in a 14-21 game with 167 passing yards and a touchdown.

The team is hesitant, as it should be, with starting a rookie quarterback who was supposedly raw, but that rawness has just looked like poise so far. It’s early to tell after one preseason game, but a second big performance from Tannehill could go a long way in helping to give the Texas A&M product the starting gig. He has looked much better than Moore, and the distance between both QBs could distance even further depending on how tonight’s game goes. Tannehill is of course familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman’s offense, as the former TAMU head coach helped lead Tannehill to a successful 2011 season.

I like Matt Moore, but I don’t see the sense in starting him this season if Tannehill plays well in this game. At first I was a doubter, but the former Aggie is doing everything to prove me wrong.

It was revealed on HBO Hard Knocks that Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush has given Chris Hogan a nickname that should stick: 7-11. The nickname is due to the fact that the unheralded Hogan is almost always open during practice.

Aug. 4, 2012; Miami, FL, USA; Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin looks on during a scrimmage at Sun Life Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Thus, could Hogan be a diamond in the rough? Of course, the rough is very rough. He was a lacrosse player at Penn State before playing cornerback for just one season at Monmouth. That’s it.

The 23-year-old wide receiver was signed to a futures contract early in January and is a UDFA from last year. I mean, Undrafted University (gotta love that quote from Steve Gregory) is the only place one-year players go once they come into the NFL.

While Chris Hogan is a practice squad player, he’s impressed enough to at least warrant consideration for a spot on the practice squad. It’s not going to be easy, as Jeff Fuller, B.J. Cunningham, and Rishard Mathews are more than healthy competition. The Dolphins are extremely thin at wide receiver, and Hogan has already been on the practice squad.

As for being a “diamond”, that’s a stretch in terms of skill. However, consider where Hogan came from and how he has gotten into the league, he’s a diamond. He has been getting open in practice and has been a surprising bright spot; even Roberto Wallace was criticize heavily in practice on Hard Knocks.

Right now, Hogan is working with the second and thirds-stringers and has earned the praise of Ryan Tannehill as well. The rising receiver could get a shot with the starters down the road, and Hogan has a shot at making the 53-man roster if he can keep it up. It’s not a good shot, but there’s a chance.

Also, Michael Egnew has been terrible, as seen on Hard Knocks. Mike Sherman even yelled that he would cut the rookie TE if he was the GM. He’s lucky he has talent and was a high pick, because he hasn’t grasped the offense and has looked awful. Charles Clay and veteran Anthony Fasano are clearly the better players, and both make a nice duo of TEs with very different skill-sets. But that’s a piece for, perhaps, another day.
