The New York Jets are not just going to give away Darrelle Revis, but they have certainly shown that they are willing to get a deal done if it will help their team in the long run. Revis, the team’s best player, might not fetch the kind of value the Jets will want in order to feel comfortable doing such a deal.

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post wrote, “While the Jets still aren’t ruling out a trade of Darrelle Revis, a survey of executives at the NFL scouting combine indicates getting fair value — much less a franchise-changing haul — could prove difficult.”

This comes from a survey of executives conducted by the post- a survey that included Buddy Nix of the Buffalo Bills and Jon Schneider of the Seattle Seahawks. The Jets have downplayed rumors that they are trading Revis, but Hubbuch notes that they haven’t exactly denied those rumors either.

My feeling is that Revis won’t get traded, and head coach Rex Ryan said that he does “not expect” Revis to be traded. This is likely because it will be difficult for the Jets to get enough out of the deal to where they feel like it’s worth it for them to part with their best player. John Idzik said a lot to downplay that Darrelle Revis is not happy with the Jets organization or that the Jets don’t want him; the latter seems to be more important at this stage.

The Post notes that the Denver Broncos are one of the teams that could try to acquire Revis, and I would like to share a quote from AFC East GM Buddy Nix. You can also read the quote from Schneider and more info by following the link above.

Nix said to the Post, “He’s a great football player, so somebody will figure out how to do it if he becomes available, I would think. The cap will [hinder the free-agent and trade markets], but there’s still a lot of people that can finagle that thing. They would figure out a way.”

The New York Jets GM and HC pairing also stated once again that the Jets will bring in competition for Mark Sanchez this offseason, and it sounds like the Jets are just trying to get one last bit of hope and light a spark under Sanchez. It probably won’t work, but at least the Jets are willing to give it a shot. They will most likely bring in a significant enough QB (like Matt Moore or Matt Flynn), and I have a feeling the new QB will eventually usurp Sanchez for the starting job. With a weak draft class this year, it seems more likely that the Jets will bring in a veteran for competition as opposed to the developmental projects in this draft.

John Idzik said, “We’re going to do everything to increase the competition so that he plays better,” and Rex Ryan pretty much said the exact same thing. From what I’ve been reading, Flynn seems to be the most-talked about QB in Jets circles due to the Idzik-Seattle connection as well as his talent and cheaper trading value than Alex Smith.

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

1. The New England Patriots got a steal in the 2010 NFL Draft when they selected Florida Gators star middle linebacker Brandon Spikes with the 62nd pick. After showing flashes in his first two seasons but unable to stay healthy and consistent, Spikes turned the corner in 2012 and was healthy for almost the entire season. Spikes is a catalyst for this defense, and he is one of the best run-stopping linebackers in the NFL today. When you watch him, it’s just incredible how strong he is, how explosive he is, how vicious he is, and how fast he gets downhill to stop the run.

Even though Spikes is a terrible coverage linebacker, I’ll definitely take the bad with the good. NE Patriots Draft continues their series where they re-grade past Patriots picks, and Dan Hope gave the selection of Spikes an “A-”.

2. Percy Harvin has always been whispered around by Patriots fans in rumors and speculation as a possible trade candidate for this team. Those whispers have become open discussion in Patriots Nation, and Harvin has become quite the NFL news topic now that the Minnesota Vikings sound more open to dealing him. They obviously aren’t just going to give him away or anything, and they will command a large fee for Harvin’s services. He has plenty of value to this team and is one of the league’s premier playmakers. If the Patriots were able to pry him away (they would likely need to give some 2014 picks in there as well), then he would be an enormous weapon. I’d rather have the Pats gauge Wes Welker‘s interest in re-signing first before giving a king’s ransom for Harvin, but there’s little doubt that Harvin is the better player (when you factor in age).

Rotoworld speculates that a deal between the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings involving Percy Harvin and Matt Flynn could work, and they toss out Flynn and a second-rounder for Harvin as a potential deal. It sounds like the Vikes are content to roll with Christian Ponder going forward, so they might actually want picks instead of Flynn. But that’s an interesting thought.

3. Former New England Patriots beat guy Ian Rapoport said that Joe Flacco’s ambitious agent Joe Linta and the Baltimore Ravens do not have any talks scheduled. Flacco wants to be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL after rejecting a top five contract last season, and let’s just say that I’m not a fan of the idea of him making more than Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Aaron Rodgers (just to name three). I highly doubt Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome is either, and this is a contract discussion that has ramifications for other key members of the Ravens, especially WR Anquan Boldin.

4. Kevin Weidl is one of my favorite college scouts, and he has done some in-depth reports on New England Patriots prospects for ESPN Boston. Yesterday, he took to Twitter to discuss Purdue cornerback Josh Johnson’s game tape against Notre Dame which he called “strong” due to Johnson’s instincts, toughness, and fluidity. Weidl did note his concern for Johnson’s size, as he is just 5’11″, 195 pounds. But he plays tough, and some believe he is worth a fifth-round pick.

5. Former New England Patriots wide receiver David Patten was hired as a coach for West Carolina, where he will also finish up his degree. This is great news for Patriots fans, and I wish the best of luck for Patten in his future with West Carolina. Great hire for the Catamounts.

There has been speculation for quite some time that the Cleveland Browns would trade for New England Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett, who will enter the third season of his career as Tom Brady‘s backup. These rumors were spurned by the Browns hiring of Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Lombardi, formerly the Oakland Raiders GM and NFL Network analyst.

Kirby Lee/USA TODAY Sports

Lombardi rated Mallett as his highest quarterback on his board in the 2011 NFL Draft, ahead of the likes of Jake Lockers, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton, and Christian Ponder. So yeah, Lombardi is really high on Mallett, and that was the main discussion spurning the talk that the Browns would pursue Mallett this offseason. They are still more than willing to add a new quarterback to push Brandon Weeden in training camp, but the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that the Browns are not expected to go after Ryan Mallett.

Mary Kay Cabot does view quarterback as a need for the Browns and calls Matt Flynn, Alex Smith, and Michael Vick the “big-names” on the market this offseason. She implies that Smith will be too difficult for the Browns to get due to the number of teams set to go after him, and she writes that the Browns will most likely not add Vick. So, based on this piece, it looks like Flynn is the most likely option of the upper-tier guys for the Browns. As Cabot writes, there is basically no chance of the Browns poaching AFC North quarterback Joe Flacco this offseason.

The Cleveland Browns could get a former New England Patriots backup quarterback, though, as Cabot lists Brian Hoyer among the second-tier free agents. Unproven but intriguing New Orleans Saints backup Chase Daniel is the other QB she lists. Daniel was better than Blaine Gabbert in college (even though he came before Gabbert at Missouri), but the Browns need to go after someone a little bit better than Daniel and Hoyer. I’m surprised Cabot didn’t list Matt Moore in there as an option for the Browns, but that might be because the Browns either don’t like them or she doesn’t view him as a viable candidate or fit. Or she was just throwing out names and forgot, but the point remains that Patriots fans shouldn’t expect Mallett to go to Cleveland. There’s a greater chance of Hoyer heading to the state of Ohio.
