The New York Jets thorough search for a new GM continues, and Jason La Canfora is reporting that the Jets will interview Green Bay Packers executive John Dorsey this weekend. The NFL insider adds that Dorsey has a “strong shot” at becoming a GM after Andy Reid went to the Kansas City Chiefs, as it is rumored that the two will team up in Kansas City.

The Jets are focusing on some of the top names on the market right now in San Francisco’s Tom Gamble, Marc Ross of the New York Giants, Atlanta’s David Caldwell, Cleveland’s veteran GM Tom Heckert, and they could even promote one of their own in exec Scott Cohen.

There are plenty of possibilities for the Jets, but the question is whether or not they can nab their preferred candidate by selling this team to them. With Gamble being such a hot name on the open market (the Browns, Chargers, and Jaguars have shown interest), it might be more difficult to grab the New York native.

Dorsey was promoted by the Packers this spring to the role of “director of football operations”, but it seems unlikely that he picks the Jets due to the connection with Andy Reid. If things do indeed fall in place for Reid and the Chiefs, then Scott Pioli will be on his way out and Dorsey on his way into K.C.

The New York Jets have scheduled an interview with recently fired Cleveland Browns GM Tom Heckert, according to a tweet from Cleveland Plain Dealer beat writer Mary Kay Cabot. She adds that another team “is heavily pursuing” Heckert, but that the other team in question is not the Arizona Cardinals. That falls in line with a report from FOX Philadelphia yesterday that stated if Andy Reid wants to bring Tom Heckert with him to Arizona, then that could be a deal-breaker there.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Now, on to the New York Jets. The prospective GMs they want to fill the vacant post left by Mike Tannenbaum are all some of the biggest names in the business, and they are all clearly light years ahead of Tannenbaum in all aspects of being a good GM. I mean, you could make the case for Tannenbaum being one of the worst five GMs in the NFL.

Tom Gamble, who has New York ties, is Trent Baalke’s director of player personnel for the San Francisco 49ers, and Gamble is one of the hottest names on the open market. The Jets have shown interest in him, and in New York Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross. The Giants top executive is another big fish in the water, and he would also be a huge upgrade for the Jets at the GM position.

The Jets have plenty of options, and they desperately want a highly skilled GM. They went as far as to ask Bill Polian to take the GM job, and he pretty much rejected it outright. That’s the thing for the Jets, it’s going to be extremely difficult for Woody Johnson and co. to adequately sell this team to a top-flight executive like Gamble or Ross, especially since there are other big openings out there.

We’ll see how much interest Heckert shows, and I think the Jets have a good chance at landing him if they want to go in that direction. Heckert just came from the Cleveland Browns, so the Jets just might be an upgrade in his eyes.

The New York Jets are targeting two of the hottest prospective GMs on the market after firing Mike Tannenbaum today. In addition to requesting to interview San Francisco 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble, the Jets have also asked the New York Giants about interviewing one of the top scouting minds in the business in Giants college scouting director Marc Ross. The news comes to us from Kim Jones of the NFL Network.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Ross has also been identified as a top target for the Carolina Panthers General Manager search, and he will likely be a suitor for many other teams in the near future. The Jets hunt for a new GM is on, and they are certainly setting their goals high. Both Gamble and Ross have ties to New York, so the geographic advantage may help the Jets a little bit as they try to sell the gig to some of the top minds in the NFL.

The Jets first went after former Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian, but it sounds like they were immediately rejected by the ESPN analyst. I doubt Polian would want to leave his comfortable post with ESPN for an uncertain gig like the one the Jets have.

Ross has helped the Giants build some terrific drafts, and he does an incredible job of spotting less-heralded talent in the middle and later rounds. That sort of ability to build a deep roster and draft well is something the Jets are sorely lacking, which would make Ross an even more attractive candidate for this franchise.

Update: FanSided’s New York Jets writer Alan Schechter from The Jet Press tweeted to me that the Giants have granted the Jets permission to talk to Ross. Alan ha solid connections with the team, and we’ll see when the interview is scheduled.
