Now this was an interesting, final-day 2013 NFL Mock Draft for the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. The New England Patriots used their two second-round selections on USC Trojans wide receiver Robert Woods and Purdue Boilermakers defensive tackle Kawann Short, and now the NFL Mocks crew have the Patriots taking Baylor Bears wide receiver Terrance Williams with the 83rd pick and LSU Tigers pass rusher Sam Montgomery with the 91st pick.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Williams has some upside and looks like a terrific vertical threat with his speed, but the issue with Williams is the fact that he isn’t much good at anything other than being fast and stretching the field vertically. Williams’s route-tree is pretty limited, and he is a very inconsistent pass-catcher. He isn’t a terrible pick for the Pats in the late third-round, but I would have preferred a different big-play receiver there in Marshall’s Aaron Dobson. Musket Fire readers often ask me about Dobson, and I want the Patriots to draft this guy in the third round; I view him as a superior prospect to Williams. Dobson can make his fair share of plays.

The other pick made by the Patriots in the third round of this mock is the selection of LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery to boost the pass rush. The Patriots took two wideouts and addressed the interior of the defensive line in the second, so now NFL Mocks believes the Patriots will look to help out the outside pass rush and get a guy in Montgomery who could get some time filling in for Rob Ninkovich at left end.

Montgomery is a quality pick in the late third round, because he’s below his market value and has some upside that could be worked with for the Patriots. The Pats could use his raw ability to get after the passer, and I don’t mind this pick at all. The one thing that I can’t seem to get over about this mock draft is the fact that the Patriots were never able to address the cornerback position. Should they have taken Blidi Wreh-Wilson (ended up at 77 to the Miami Dolphins, who took both Connecticut Huskies CBs) instead of Kawann Short in the late second? Sound off in the comments section.

By the way, I would have rather had Stedman Bailey over Williams, and I’m torn between Bailey and Dobson. Any thoughts on which of those two receivers is the better prospect?

The New England Patriots now have eight picks to use in the 2013 NFL Draft, and one wonders if they will decide to use a third-round- or even a second-round- choice on former LSU Tigers star defensive back Tyrann Mathieu. The character concerns are pronounced, and the concerns of where he plays at the pro-level are also pronounced. There are some scouts who don’t even think Mathieu should be drafted, so the question of how his playmaking skills in college translate to the NFL is a pressing one.

Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

Peter King was asked on Mut & Merloni today a variety of questions relating to the New England Patriots in the 2013 NFL Draft, and he was asked about Tyrann Mathieu. The famed Sports Illustrated NFL writer said on Mathieu, “I think Bill [Belichick] is exactly the same way. If Bill loves this guy, he’ll take him, and he’s not going to let all these things stand in the way of him taking him. But … if you’ve got a bunch of B+ guys, A guys, who never had any trouble and who are the equal as a corner of Mathieu, maybe not the playmaker, certainly, that he is, but if you’ve got all these really good players at the position who you’re not going to have to worry about at 10 on a Friday night, why would you not pick one of them instead of Tyrann Mathieu? That’s where I would fall on this. You’ve got enough things to worry about when you build your team. This is a guy who absolutely consistently got in trouble in college, consistently. When you have to transfer from a football factory, which I’m sure he got 93 chances to turn his life around and he didn’t do it, do you really want to take a chance on that guy? Again, Bill Belichick can handle it because he’s done that over the years. If you’re given the choice, why do it? I think there are cover guys who are his equal who are still left on the board.”

This is all very true. If there is any team in the best chance to sap the best of Mathieu’s abilities, then it would be the Patriots. However, I’m not sure where he fits. I view him as an ideal slot cornerback who would struggle on the outside (if the Pats view him as a potential outside CB, then that’s significant) and would be awful at safety. Mathieu has the upside of a guy like Cortland Finnegan, but he has the downside of a guy who is out of the league after his rookie year. The Patriots already have a solid slot CB locked up in Kyle Arrington, and he isn’t much of an outside corner himself.

Mathieu could be a quality pick for the Patriots in like the third round, but it all depends on how sold the Patriots are on him. I’m not exactly high on Mathieu, but I’ll trust Bill Belichick and the Patriots front office on this issue. King’s insight to this issue is invaluable, and I would recommend following the link above to WEEI and checking out the other thoughts he poured on the 2013 NFL Draft.

The New York Jets have so many different directions that they can take in the 2013 NFL Draft, now that they have two first-round picks with the ninth and 13th selections. The Jets have a high amount of interest in West Virginia Mountaineers star wide receiver Tavon Austin, and Rich Cimini of ESPN New York is the latest writer to report that the Jets “love” Austin.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Cimini also added that the Jets are “not as high on” former LSU Tigers pass rusher Barkevious Mingo “as some think”. Mingo has been the most popular player mocked to the New York Jets, and I recently went over a 2013 NFL Mock Draft today in which the Jets took Mingo after swapping their 9th pick for the San Diego Chargers 11th pick (the Chargers wanted D.J. Fluker in this mock).

The Austin-Jets rumors are starting to rise, and it sounds like there is a strong chance that the Jets take Austin with the 13th pick in the draft. The Jets could really use his playmaking ability at the wide receiver position, and Mark Sanchez would certainly be thankful for Austin’s services. Austin will almost certainly not fall out of the top-half of the draft, and an AFC East rival in the Buffalo Bills reportedly have Tavon Austin at the very top of their big board.

As for Mingo, he seems like a logical pick for the Jets. But Rich Cimini adds that the Jets could be looking for an interior defensive lineman, and he agrees with Jason La Canfora’s suggestion that it could be Star Lotulelei. If he or Sharrif Floyd is on the board for the Jets with the ninth pick, then either one of them could very well be the pick for the Jets there.
