NFL Insider Aaron Wilson added that the deal between Ryan and the Patriots will last for four seasons, which is really the generic rookie contract. It’s always a good sign to see rookies sign deals quickly, and it seems like all three of them have the same agents (I know at least two of them do).

Anyway, Ryan is the best of three Rutgers players drafted by the Patriots, and he was a solid addition for the Patriots. Although he is burn-prone due to his aggressiveness and lack of long speed, Ryan is a quick cornerback who makes plays and has the ideal skillset for the slot. Ryan does an excellent job of stopping the run, and he is also a physical CB. It seems like Ryan has a lot in common with Kyle Arrington as a player and in the character department as well, but I am hoping that Ryan can develop a better game as an outside corner than Arrington. However, there is nothing wrong with being an Arrington-clone in the slot, because he is definitely one of the better slot corners in the league.

1. Kyle Arrington inked a rich four-year deal with the New England Patriots this offseason, affirming Bill Belichick’s love for Arrington and Arrington’s place as one of the better slot CBs in the league. He told the Boston Herald’s Karen Guregian why he gave up the No. 24 to incoming strong safety Adrian Wilson, “It’s one of those things where anything I can do to solidify the camaraderie within the group, I’m down for it.”

Arrington, who will wear the No. 25 next season, was also involved in helping the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Per the Boston Herald, he was raising money on Friday night on behalf of The One Fund Boston and ended up raising $7,500 whilst partaking in photos and signing autographs at Scoreboards Bar & Grill.

“All I needed to hear, was fund-raising for The One Fund,” Arrington said. “It’s a shame what happened that tragic week. As athletes representing this great city, it’s the least we can do, helping out any way we can. We just want to let the city know, as much as they support us, we’ll do the same in return.’’

2. WGR 550 pretty much stated the obvious yesterday on former USC Trojans wide receiver Robert Woods, as they wrote that Woods is “firmly in the conversation” to start next to Stevie Johnson at wide receiver. The Bills made a big effort to change their passing attack through the 2013 NFL Draft by picking up Robert Woods, Da’Rick Rogers, and, of course, quarterback E.J. Manuel in the first round. Woods is clearly the best guy to start at No. 2 for the Bills, and Rogers could win the No. 3 job and then T.J. Graham would to the No. 4 wide receiver in Buffalo.

3. Speaking of Rogers, Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone delivered an excellent quote on the high-upside but enigmatic and inconsistent UDFA signing. Marrone said during a conference call, “It’s a one-shot deal. Either you’ve learned your lesson and you’ve grown up and you’re going to go forward and mature, or you haven’t learned your lesson and you’re going to be out on the street. It’s that simple.”

Any thoughts on how Rogers’s future will shake out for the Bills? Marrone’s quote, in my opinion, was right on point, and I don’t think there can be any disagreements with his logic.

4. Now, back to Woods. I hope nobody compares Woods to Aaron Dobson and does that whole “If they chose this guy instead…”, but I’m sure it’s going to happen. It won’t just happen with Woods (people could also use Keenan Allen and Markus Wheaton as comparison points), but Mike Reiss was the one who brought this up with the fellow AFC East rookie wideout, “Along those same lines, I think it’s going to be interesting to compare and contrast Bills rookie receiver Robert Woods (41st overall) and Patriots rookie receiver Aaron Dobson (59th overall) in the next few years. As Bill Belichick said, the Patriots entered the draft with the intention of addressing the receiver position, and by trading down from 29 to the 50s they took themselves out of the mix for Woods, who reportedly looked sharp in Buffalo’s rookie minicamp. I think Woods was more of a fit for the Patriots than Cordarrelle Patterson (29th, Vikings) or Justin Hunter (34th, Titans), the other receivers taken in the range that the Patriots traded out of. Now they’ll face Woods twice a year.”

5. It will be interesting to see when Charles Woodson ends up getting signed by somebody, because he can’t be on the free agent market forever. I never wanted the Patriots to sign him, but I can see Woodson being of value to other NFL teams. One of those teams is not the Cleveland Browns, and their goal is to go younger in the secondary. T.J. Ward is a very good free safety, and the Browns organization is high on the chances of Tashaun Gipson being a breakout S. Former Notre Dame star safety Jamoris Slaughter was drafted by the Browns as well, and it is clear that they want to go young there. ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Grossi wrote yesterday in his mailbag that the Browns are not interested in Woodson, and that’s the best policy for the Browns.

1. According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, new New England Patriots strong safety Adrian Wilson has indeed taken the No. 24 from slot cornerback Kyle Arrington, who will now wear the No. 25. Big offseason signing Danny Amendola will don the No. 80 for the Pats, in case anybody was wondering.

2. From Luke Hughes of NESN in a piece on Patriots star linebacker Jerod Mayo, “Mayo wouldn’t describe himself as anything more than just a blue collar player, and that hardworking style may be the perfect solution to the Patriots’ recent defensive woes.”

3. Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said that the team ”continues to talk” to top available defensive end John Abraham, who is still being linked to the New England Patriots. The Titans recently brought Abraham in for a visit, and it seemed like both sides were going somewhere. Although neither side has signed, there is still interest. Mike Loyko reported that the Patriots are the front-runners for John Abraham, but I can’t help but think that the Titans are in the driver’s seat. I wonder if Abraham’s asking price is still scaring away teams, because that was the reason why the Miami Dolphins balked. I also think it’s the reason why the Patriots didn’t sign him, and I have a feeling the Pats won’t sign him, unless if he does significantly drop his demands.

4. Doug Marrone consented that rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel needs to work on his mechanics and footwork, and it is pretty obvious that Manuel’s technique is lacking. Manuel has a great arm and the kind of athleticism that was the reason why he got drafted in the first round, but he is also inconsistent and a project player overall. Adam Schefter continues to reiterate that the Buffalo Bills will start Manuel, and I think they will. But they won’t be afraid to throw in Kevin Kolb if Manuel struggles enough, but I think they will allow the growing pains to happen as Manuel develops. He has a lot of upside, but Marrone’s acknowledgement of Manuel’s shortcomings come as no surprise. I wonder, though, if the Bills will value Kolb higher as a result.

5. Ian Rapoport delivered another really interesting nugget to us, and that is that fellow veteran free agent defensive end Dwight Freeney will take visits next week. Rapoport adds that the interest in Freeney will “heat up”, and that four or five teams are currently interested, so this is something to keep a close eye on. Do you guys think the Patriots are one of those handful of teams with interest? The Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, and Detroit Lions are three teams, per Rapoport, that have interest in Freeney, who is 33 years old and is, unlike Abraham, willing to be a situational pass rusher. Freeney knows that this is what is best for his longevity and productivity in this league as a whole, while Abraham knows he is healthy and has more time left in the tank. Abraham wants to be a full-time DE, and I doubt the Patriots would want to give into that demand either.
