The New England Patriots released two defensive tackles recently who both specialize in run defense, and both players were promptly claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars off of waivers. The first guy the Jaguars picked up was 25-year-old Alabama product Brandon Deaderick, who was a “good” cut for the Patriots given his lack of pass rushing ability. Both Tommy Kelly and Armond Armstead are better players than Deaderick, and the most important thing is that they both give the Patriots much-needed improvement in the interior pass rushing department. Deaderick is in a better position with the Jaguars, because they do have a need for a guy who can play the run in the rotation on their roster.

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

If you are a Jaguars fan and you like Deaderick against the run, then you should love Kyle Love‘s run defense. Although he is also a total non-factor as a pass rusher, the big DT is very good against the run and is a solid contributor at defensive tackle overall. Love’s release made the Patriots thin on the interior, and Love is confident in his ability to quickly gain weight in the fight against Type-2 diabetes. I’m not going to get into the moral issues regarding his release, and I will instead focus on what he means for the Jacksonville Jaguars going forward.

Love is just 26, and I think he’s going to start in Jacksonville. Love is clearly better than Roy Miller, and he’s a solid player overall with the ability to make an impact on run defense. The Patriots were likely wary of Love’s ability to gain enough weight to continue being an effective run defender, which is why they asked him to retire for a year. Love said “no”, and thus is confident in his ability to gain that weight. I hope he is vindicated in this confidence, because Love is a great player, person, and somebody who I truly want to see succeed as much as possible in 2013.

Jacksonville, you guys are getting a heckuva a person, a feel-good story, and a quality football player.

Well, it sure didn’t take long for former New England Patriots defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick to find work, as Deaderick was claimed off of waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars promptly after receiving his walking papers from the Patriots. Some were surprised by the timing of the release, but I’m not. Deaderick received significant playing time down the stretch last season, but he was mostly part of the problem at DT rather than part of the solution due to his inability to effectively rush the passer. Overall, Deaderick was a subpar player for the Patriots, as Armond Armstead and Tommy Kelly were both clear upgrades over Deaderick.

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

That’s not to say that Deaderick doesn’t have value, though, and the Patriots knew that. They released him at this point during the season as a courtesy to Deaderick, so that he could sign with another team before training camp and find a niche with that team. The Jacksonville Jaguars are that team, and I like the move they made to sign Deaderick.

Although I have been very critical of Deaderick in this space, I think his ability to stop the run, his cheap contract, and his young age (25), make him a quality piece for the Jaguars. He will surely capture a gig in the team’s defensive tackle rotation, and a change of scenery could do this young DT well. He will help plug the interior for the Jags and will make just $630,000.

A roster spot for Deaderick isn’t guaranteed on the Jaguars, but I would be surprised if he didn’t make the Jags roster. His body in run defense is better used in Jacksonville, and it never seemed like there was a place for him in New England after the offseason signings of Armstead and Kelly. However, the heavy snaps he received towards the end of the 2012 season show that Deaderick has a spot in a rotation, and it’s good to see him get that opportunity with the Jaguars; he seems like a great guy.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could go in several directions with the 33rd pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, as they will start the action on Day Two. The Jaguars are reportedly open to trading the pick, but they have also been linked to two very talented defensive backs in reports today. Jacksonville could decide to take Florida International safety Jonathan Cyprien and keep him in the state of Florida, and the NFL Network’s Gil Brandt reports that the Jaguars are “leaning toward” taking Mississippi State Bulldogs cornerback Johnthan Banks instead of a quarterback. The Jaguars have also been rumored to taking a quarterback like Syracuse’s Ryan Nassib with the top pick in the second round, but I doubt they add a QB.

Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

The Jaguars are in position to have a very strong draft under first-time GM David Caldwell, as they selected Luke Joeckel in the first round to give the team a pair of bookend tackles in Joeckel and the always steady Eugene Monroe. In a deep draft, trading down is usually the best option for teams like the Jaguars that have several needs to fill out.

Going the defensive back route would be wise for the Jaguars, but I wouldn’t advocate drafting Banks at 33 over trading down, unless if they either really like Banks or don’t like any of the offers they are getting for the 33rd pick. Banks is still one of my favorite prospects in the 2013 NFL Draft, but I hope the Jaguars don’t take him off the board so that the Patriots can take Banks.

His forty time at the 2013 NFL Combine killed his draft stock and led to huge speed concerns, but Banks was burned less in college than first-round choice Desmond Trufant. Although Trufant is better, Banks isn’t too far off and was once viewed as a top-half, first-round selection. Banks would be an excellent pick for teams in the second round, and I wonder if the Jaguars will indeed stand pat at 33 and pull a solid CB off the board.
