Elon wide receiver Aaron Mellette is one of the most intriguing small school prospects in this draft class, and he is starting to get some major interest leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft. NFL Insider Aaron Wilson is reporting that Mellette has workouts scheduled with the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and the Seattle Seahawks. He also has interest from notable AFC teams in the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, and the New England Patriots.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets have been looking at several small school wide receivers, so the interest in Mellette is no surprise. All of the teams interested in Mellette could use him, and the Panthers, Pats, Texans, Ravens, and Jets are the five teams with the biggest need for a wide receiver. Draft analysts such as Tony Pauline and Greg Cosell have praised the Elon wideout, so he is a name to keep in mind.

We’ll see if the Patriots reported interest in Mellette amounts to something, and it’s interesting to see that two AFC East teams are showing at least some interest in him. Mellette is tabbed as a sleeper on the third day of the draft, and he is a very good possession receiver who runs extremely precise routes. He can’t stretch the field vertically, though, so he’s strictly a possession guy.

The fact that Mellette struggles to gain separation makes him a better signing for teams like the Panthers, Jets, and Ravens than teams like the Patriots and Texans who are specifically looking for guys to stretch the field. But Mellette can still be an asset to those teams if they think he presents good enough value for them, because Mellette has great size at 6’3″ and has safe hands. It seems like Mellette could be a great red zone target with that Anquan Boldin-esque ability to high point the ball.

The New York Jets wanted to keep LaRon Landry, but the strong safety is as good as gone given all the interest he has received on the free agent market. Expected to get around $6 million per year in a deal, Landry is currently on a visit with the Indianapolis Colts and is not expected to leave without a contract. Many believe that the safety-needy Colts will end up signing Landry and get the upgrade they need in their secondary. While Landry is an upgrade, I really think the Colts should be going after a free safety or more of a true cover guy deep downfield.

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are also interested in adding a safety, largely because Dashon Goldson is going to be signing elsewhere this offseason. Landry isn’t a replacement for Goldson at FS, but he is a coveted free agent and reportedly has a visit scheduled with the 49ers. Colts beat writer Mike Chappell tweeted that Landry is visiting the Colts today and will visit the 49ers tomorrow.

Some believe that if the 49ers do decide to sign Landry, then they will most likely cut Donte Whitner at strong safety. The interest from the 49ers seems a little quizzical, whereas Landry would make sense for the Colts to sign. The Arizona Cardinals are also suitors for Landry, but it seems like he is set to be signed by the Colts. The Detroit Lions are also interested in Landry and have a major need at the safety position as well.

This is some very interesting news and specifically bad news for New England Patriots fans. The news about Aqib Talib has been very quiet as of late, but that is all about to change. Talib has been in contact with the Patriots about re-signing since the end of the season, but neither side has been able to work out a deal. With the market now open for business, it looks like Talib might end up with one of the Patriots’ arch-rivals: the Colts. Former Colts general manager Bill Polian was asked about some possible Colts moves and immediately jumped to Talib as a possible free-agent splash. Given that he’s about a year removed from heading that organization, it seems pretty likely that Polian has some insight about a potential deal. There is nothing being reported in terms of a contract just yet, but a cryptic tweet from Colts owner Jim Irsay, which was the basis of the question to Polian, does raise some eyebrows about the possibility. https://twitter.com/JimIrsay/status/311580781300576256
Also, Mark Maske of the Washington Post reported Tuesday night that the Redskins remain in the running for Aqib Talib, but may not have the money to get a deal done. According to Maske a person with knowledge of the Redskins’ situation said it still appears that the team will have a difficult time fitting a contract for Talib beneath the salary cap. That person said the Redskins would like to sign Talib but “do not have enough cash.”
