The Green Bay Packers released veteran cornerback and defensive leader Charles Woodson yesterday, and New England Patriots fans are already wondering if Woodson could fit with the Patriots secondary. Aqib Talib and Kyle Arrington are both set to hit free agency, and there are a few fans who wonder if a guy like Woodson could help gives this team needed veteran leadership in the secondary, as well as a quality corner.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

According to ESPN’s top reporter Ed Werder on NFL Live, Woodson would likely try to sign on with a contender; he named the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos as two teams Woodson could look to sign with. Woodson’s future on the team was uncertain after speculation in January, and after not hearing from the Pack he was released yesterday. It’s tough to see a veteran part ways with a team he has starred for, but the 36-year-old and the Packers knew it was time to move on.

Woodson isn’t what he used to be, but he still has plenty of value as a solid coverage corner. Best fit as a nickel guy, Woodson is still a very good run defender (that valuable skill to the Patriots organization in a CB has not deteriorated due to old age) but the Packers did overrated his pass rushing ability a bit. Even so, Woodson can still help blitz as a nickel guy, even if I prefer Kyle Arrington in run defense and as a pass rusher.

It all comes down to cost, because it’s pretty much a guarantee that Woodson is going to be more expensive than Arrington; if the Pats choose to replace their slot corner. Arrington is actually solid in the slot and will come cheap, but Woodson is a better player overall (even at 36). Woodson also brings veteran leadership, but again, the most important thing here is cost.

It’s a possible that the Patriots sign Woodson to the team, but I just don’t see it happening. I think the Pats need to focus on their cornerback situation outside the numbers, because, as we all know, Aqib Talib is slated to hit free agency and will likely look for a significant contract. Whether or not the Patriots value him as much as another team might remains to be seen, but I would rather focus on negotiating with Talib and taking a long look at better CBs who are best fit on the outside (Brent Grimes and Chris Houston are two names that come to mind).

The Packers will have to deal without Jennings and now-retired Packers great Donald Driver, but New England Patriots fans aren’t too concerned about the Packers. Instead, the focus turns to a divisional rival and how they will be impacted if they do indeed add a talented wideout like Greg Jennings.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

First off, let’s take a look at the story. Jennings joined the Dolphins official TV show yesterday, stared into the camera, and said this (via The Palm Beach Post), “Joe, how you doing. Remember me?”

The 29-year-old knows it’s time for a change of teams, but there could be some familiarity with change. Joe Philbin was, of course, Jennings’s offensive coordinator in Green Bay before he left prior to the 2012 season for the head coaching gig with the Miami Dolphins. That’s the strongest link between Jennings and the Dolphins, and it looks like it could be what will propel a move for Jennings down south and into the AFC East,

The Dolphins will have to handle the question of re-signing Brian Hartline, who is a very good No. 2 wide receiver to have due to his ability to do different things at the position. He has steady hands, great straight-line speed as a deep threat, and he was the team’s most productive receiver in a breakout year with Ryan Tannehill.

It is possible for the Dolphins to sign Jennings and keep Hartline, but it might not be likely. The big thing here is that the Dolphins, mainly owner Stephen Ross, have made it known that they want and need playmakers- especially on offense. There is no doubting that, especially since the ‘Fins lack a true No. 1 receiver. That’s something Jennings would give this team, and it would be a huge boost for Tannehill and the offense as a whole.

Greg Jennings called Philbin one of his favorite coaches, and he also state that he has prepared his family for a change. He also told the Palm Beach Post hat he and Philbin have a “great relationship”.

A deal between Jennings and the Miami Dolphins is a hot-button rumor mill topic that has become even hotter after Jennings’s comments about Philbin and his future. Beyond that, he is an excellent fit for the Dolphins from a “team need” and X’s and O’s standpoint; it just seems to make too much sense. But as always, we tend to get wrapped up into speculation early so we’ll see how things move forward when Jennings officially hits the market.

There may be not better weekend in professional sports than divisional weekend for the NFL. There are 8 quality teams going at it for two days straight, how much more could a sports fan want. This weekend we get maybe as good as of games as we can hope for, kicking off the weekend with a rematch of the Broncos and Ravens, and then another rematch with the ‘Niners and Packers. These two games alone are going to be very good games, then on Sunday the red hot Seahawks take on the number one seed Falcons, followed by of course the Texans and Pats rematch, all are going to be awesome games.

Baltimore vs. Denver 4:30 pm (CBS)

When these two teams met in week 15 in Baltimore Denver beat them down, it was 31-3 at one point and the Broncos rolled to a 34-17 victory. Even with Ray Lewis’ return I still do not think that Baltimore’s defense can slow down Peyton’s offensive attack, they have too many weapons and Baltimore’s defense is not what it used to be. Offensively Baltimore has some weapons that they may be able to exploit Denver’s secondary but I really do not trust Joe Flacco in these big game situations, combine that with Denver’s ability to shut down the run I just do not see Baltimore going into Denver and outscoring Peyton Manning

Denver 34 Baltimore 20

Green Bay vs. San Fransisco 8:00 pm (FOX)

These two teams squared off in week one of the season and the Niners won that game pretty easily, right now however these are two very different teams from where they were in week one. The obvious one is the Niners QB change, they now have Colin Kaepernick in place of Alex Smith, this brings a whole new dimension to the Niners offense. They now can stretch the field vertically and get Kaepernick out in space where he can make some plays with his legs. The Packers are not that much different from where they were in week one but seeing the way their defense played against the Vikings in the first round of the playoff’s certainly is a great thing to see for Packers fans. When I watch the Niners this year they play a ton of man coverage on defense and Aaron Rodgers and his receivers absolutely eat man coverage up, that is the main reason why I am going to go with Green Bay in this game. They are also a very hot team and are looking similar to what they looked like during their recent Super Bowl run.

Green Bay 28 San Fransisco 24

Seattle vs. Atlanta 1:00 pm (FOX)

I have gone back and forth with this pick all week long, seeing the way Seattle came back to beat the ‘Skins in the first round was incredibly impressive, and their defense is an extremely elite defense. But, on the other hand Atlanta’s offense at times is impossible to stop because of their great outside receivers in Julio Jones and Roddy White. The thing that finally swung me to Atlanta was the fact that the Seahhawks will be without their top pass rusher Chris Clemons for the remainder of the postseason. If you can not get to Matt Ryan you will have a tough time stopping the Falcons offense, the fact that they are playing in Atlanta also helps the Falcons case.

Atlanta 24 Seattle 20

Houston vs. New England 4:30 pm (CBS)

When these teams met on ‘Monday Night Football’ on Dec. 10th America was expecting a great game between two elite teams, well the Pats eliminated that when they murdered the Texans 42-14. When looking at the rematch you can’t help but look back at 2010 when the Pats crushed the Jets 45-3 during the regular season and then lost 28-21 in the playoffs. This team seems different however, that ’10 team was younger, less experienced, and less talented than this current team. This Pats team also can run the football which will really help when facing such a physical defense like the Texans have. The key for Houston is to pressure Brady and get Foster going, if they don’ t do that they have no shot. I like the Pats because they have a big advantage at QB, and they can run the football to take some pressure off of that QB. I don’t see Matt Schaub outscoring Brady at Gillette in December.

New England 34 Houston 21
