The New England Patriots have added another undrafted free agent running back who was originally signed with another team to the 90-man roster in George Winn. I say “another”, because the Patriots picked up former Purdue Boilermakers running back Akeem Shavers after he was dropped by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Pats ended up releasing him, and they now have George Winn as a likely camp body.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Winn was signed as a UDFA by the Houston Texans before being released after rookie minicamp. Like current New England Patriots wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, Winn is an undrafted free agent who played for the Cincinnati Bearcats in college. Thompkins has made a big impact in minicamp and looks to be a steal in UDFA if he keeps it up, so we’ll see if Winn can have the same kind of success for the Patriots in training camp.

With Brandon Bolden still injured, Winn makes more sense and looks locked in as a camp body. The New England Patriots now have 88 men on the roster after signing Winn, who rushed for 1,334 yards and 13 touchdowns last season for Cincinnati. Winn is an underrated back, and I liked his tape. Bolden impressed the Pats last year as a UDFA out of Ole Miss and ended up making the roster and further impressing the team, so it is possible that Winn is the next man in line.

The issue with Winn is his speed, because he has no explosion and had a terrible 4.75 forty time. However, he averaged 5.5 yards per pop at Cincinnati, runs well, cuts well, has good vision, and he had efficient productivity in college. Mel Kiper Jr. rated Winn as his No. 1 back on the board, and I feel like the 5’11″, 210 pound RB can at least old his own for the New England Patriots. He won’t be making the roster with all the depth at running back, but I like Winn as a camp body and view him as somebody who should be able to latch onto somebody’s practice squad at least.

The New England Patriots seemed to have a void again on the offensive line after releasing former San Diego Chargers guard Tyronne Green, but they filled that small gap in depth on the 90-man roster by resigning undrafted free agent R.J. Mattes yesterday. The Patriots signed him not too long ago, and then suddenly decided to release him shortly after.

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

Now, Mattes is back on the team as a depth lineman, and it will be interesting to see if he can work himself onto the practice squad, though I highly doubt he sticks around after camp. However, Mattes has the versatility to play at either guard or tackle and was an All-ACC player last season for the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

It’s good to have one more added piece of depth on the offensive line heading into training camp, and you never know what jewel Dante Scarnecchia will unearth next. He’s had a ridiculous amount of success with undrafted free agent OLs in the past, and there’s always a chance that Mattes could be added to that lengthy list.

Mattes joins the Patriots again after signing with the team in mid-May and being released just ten days later during the month. He was a standout at N.C. State, but he just seems to be a camp body and a “chance prospect” at this point. But, again, you never know who is next with the Patriots and Coach Scar.

The New England Patriots waived former Missouri Tigers star wide receiver T.J. Moe, who was arguably the biggest steal for the Patriots in undrafted free agency this offseason. Moe was an excellent slot receiver at Mizzou with great quickness, incredible strength, precise route-running, and high character. However, Moe’s lack of long speed and only average athleticism caused him to fall out of the draft, where he was an easy scoop for the Patriots. Yesterday, though, the Pats waived the wideout, and the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe later reported that Moe tore his Achilles’ earlier this week.

Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports

Moe has the upside to be a really good slot receiver in the NFL, and he had an outside shot at making the 53-man roster this season. I have a feeling the Patriots will save him for next year, when Moe has a good chance of making the roster and becoming a factor at the wide receiver position.

I have always lauded T.J. Moe on this site, and I will continue to do so due to his skill-set as a potential difference-maker in the slot. He has all the tools to be a good slot receiver in this league, and I hope he has a quick and full recovery from this Achilles’ tear. It is awful to think that a rookie already suffered a severe injury, so hopefully Moe can quickly put it past him. I hope he ends up staying with the Patriots organization and can show his stuff next season.
