Cleveland Browns return specialist Josh Cribbs is one of the most electrifying returners in the game, but he brings little to the table outside of being a return specialist. Cribbs is terrible wide receiver by pretty much every measure, and he reportedly wanted too much money from the Browns for a player who doesn’t do much outside of returns. But Cribbs has been scoring some victories, because there are five teams interested in Cribbs’s services.

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

Interestingly enough, the Browns are not among those teams. Cribbs and his agent stated that he would have multiple teams interested, and FOX Sports also reported the same yesterday. The Browns are not interesting in keeping Cribbs, but Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that the New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Arizona Cardinals are interested in Cribbs.

Cribbs also scored a victory when the Buffalo Bills gave Leodis McKelvin a $20 million deal over four years, and that likely increases Cribbs’s value. However, it must be noted that McKelvin is in a different situation- he’s simply better. McKelvin is one year younger, is actually a better returner, and, most importantly, he can actually contribute in other ways. McKelvin is adamant that he can contribute on defense as corner for the Bills, and the Bills sorely need solid play at CB. The former first-rounder is regarded as a bust, but he showed signs of turning things around with a decent 2012 season in coverage. The Bills evidently trust that he can continue to build on that by rewarding him with a contract, and McKelvin is adamant that he can.

The problem with Josh Cribbs is that he almost certainly can’t contribute as a wide receiver, and he is going to want (and probably get, if those five teams are indeed interested) too much money for just returning kicks. The Patriots could really use some great returning, but Jeff Demps could bring that electrifying ability to the table. He is cheaper, younger, and also has a better chance of contributing on offense (although, that is not clear at this juncture). The issue with Demps is whether or not Bill Belichick wants a guy who isn’t solely focused on football, but I bet he also doesn’t want to pay for a guy like Cribbs who can’t contribute elsewhere.

As for the other four teams on the list, I can’t see any one of those teams involved (save for the Giants). The Cowboys need to focus on other issues before overpaying for a returner, the Cardinals aren’t going to sign Cribbs unless if they want to move Patrick Peterson out of returns, and the 49ers already have a terrific returner in LaMichael James who is much younger and can contribute in a big way to the offense. And oh yeah, James is also cheaper than Cribbs.

It was originally reported that Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant was arrested, and this was a result that wouldn’t have surprised anyone. However, it is now being correctly reported that it is Oakland Raiders impending free agent defensive tackle Desmond Bryant, who was arrested this morning in Miami for “criminal mischief”. Dez Bryant? Well, he was in the gym.

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Desmond Bryant is a potential New England Patriots target this offseason, because the Pats have a need for a DT who can rush the passer and push the pocket; they already have great run-stopping talent on the inside. The Pats pass rush needs improving, and even signing CFL star Armond Armstead isn’t enough.

Bryant may “only” be decent against the run, but the Raiders DT is a terrific pass rusher and one of the best interior pass rushers in the NFL. One of the top five impending free agent defensive tackles, many people believe that signing Desmond Bryant would make a lot of sense for the New England Patriots- I agree with that.

It is extremely surprising to hear that it was this “Dez” Bryant who was arrested in Miami, because Desmond Bryant is a Harvard grad and is well-regarded for his character. We’ll see how this arrest affects Bryant’s free agent stock, but I highly doubt it will affect his standing with the New England Patriots if the Pats are interested. It could affect his standing with other teams, but I doubt it will do any significant damage for his free agent stock.

Bryant’s bail is reportedly set at $1,000, so it sounds like this criminal mischief charge was basically nothing; just random stuff that happens to NFL players in Miami. Honestly, it doesn’t sound like a big deal. By the way, I feel really bad for the Cowboys Dez Bryant; people are always jumping at him when stuff like this happens. But hey, he has earned that reputation to a certain extent.

The Dallas Cowboys needed to add depth at the cornerback position, and they were able to achieve this goal by prying cornerback Sterling Moore from the New England Patriots practice squad. The playmaking cornerback is best known for the play that denied Lee Evans a touchdown in the AFC Championship game last year, but he was poor to start the season and was waived by the team. The Patriots re-signed him to the practice squad, but the former SMU star is back in the state of Texas.

Stew Milne-US PRESSWIRE

Moore will give much needed depth to the Cowboys secondary, and his ability to create turnovers will be a solid addition to the other corners on the roster. The move is especially important, because CBs Orlando Scandrick and Ben Bass could be placed on the injured reserve.

The Patriots don’t have that much depth at CB, so losing Moore from the p-squad does hurt a little bit. It isn’t a big loss, though, as he was clearly the worst cornerback on the team before his release. Kyle Arrington played worse, but he has more talent than Moore as evidenced by Arrington’s return to form these past two weeks.

The 5’10″, 200 pound dime corner had 12 tackles and a hand in two turnovers before receiving his release from the Patriots. In fact, Moore was released shortly before the trade to acquire new starting corner Aqib Talib.

The Cowboys would have only had Moore for the rest of the season given his current contract, but they have also re-signed him through the 2013 season. It looks like he is a long-term depth solution for Dallas, and they must have been impressed with his playmaking ability.
