Elon wide receiver Aaron Mellette is one of the most intriguing small school prospects in this draft class, and he is starting to get some major interest leading up to the 2013 NFL Draft. NFL Insider Aaron Wilson is reporting that Mellette has workouts scheduled with the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and the Seattle Seahawks. He also has interest from notable AFC teams in the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, and the New England Patriots.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The Jets have been looking at several small school wide receivers, so the interest in Mellette is no surprise. All of the teams interested in Mellette could use him, and the Panthers, Pats, Texans, Ravens, and Jets are the five teams with the biggest need for a wide receiver. Draft analysts such as Tony Pauline and Greg Cosell have praised the Elon wideout, so he is a name to keep in mind.

We’ll see if the Patriots reported interest in Mellette amounts to something, and it’s interesting to see that two AFC East teams are showing at least some interest in him. Mellette is tabbed as a sleeper on the third day of the draft, and he is a very good possession receiver who runs extremely precise routes. He can’t stretch the field vertically, though, so he’s strictly a possession guy.

The fact that Mellette struggles to gain separation makes him a better signing for teams like the Panthers, Jets, and Ravens than teams like the Patriots and Texans who are specifically looking for guys to stretch the field. But Mellette can still be an asset to those teams if they think he presents good enough value for them, because Mellette has great size at 6’3″ and has safe hands. It seems like Mellette could be a great red zone target with that Anquan Boldin-esque ability to high point the ball.

Alabama Crimson Tide standout right tackle D.J. Fluker will most likely hear his name called in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and he will likely be picked between the 20th and 30th picks in the draft. Fluker has shown that he really wants to play at tackle in the pros by losing some weight, but Fluker is definitely a run blocking right tackle at the pro level given his size and significant struggles against speedy edge rushers.

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

According to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, Fluker met with four teams in the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, and Minnesota Vikings. All four of these teams could use the talented Alabama product either at tackle or guard, and they will likely try to play Fluker at tackle first and then go from there. For some reason, Fluker reminds me of current Patriots RT Marcus Cannon, whom the Pats are currently high on.

I doubt the Patriots draft Fluker, but I have stated a couple of times that they will likely show some interest. They are showing some interest right now after meeting with him, but the Ravens seem like a more likely landing spot for Fluker. The Ravens could use the big tackle to help bolster their run blocking, and they could even slot him inside.

The Carolina Panthers have the biggest need for an offensive lineman, and D.J. Fluker’s best fit is actually with the Panthers. Their situation at guard is horrendous, and starting right tackle Byron Bell has shown absolutely nothing in his first two years. Even if Fluker can’t protect the passer well at tackle, he can’t be as bad as Bell.

Former West Virginia Mountaineers standout Tavon Austin has seen his draft stock rise big time after an incredible forty time at the 2013 NFL Combine, and the New England Patriots probably won’t be able to take him with the #29 pick anymore. Austin used to be regularly mocked to the Patriots, but, judging by the number of teams set to work him out or meet with him in some fashion, that’s unlikely to happen.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, and Carolina Panthers are going to work out Tavon Austin. All three teams could use another wide receiver, and Austin’s playmaking ability would be a welcome addition to these three teams. The Pats could lose Wes Welker to free agency and could still use a playmaker if they do keep him, the Ravens need a talented WR to replace Anquan Boldin, and the Panthers have never had a legitimate No. 2 receiver to pair with Steve Smith for quite some time now.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins will also meet with Austin, who could really be picked anywhere. With the way some teams have him rated, though, it seems impossible for Austin to fall out of the first round- let alone the top 20 or 25. Austin is a coveted player, but some believe he is overrated and not worth a first-round pick. A scout told NJ.com that he is like DeSean Jackson without the deep ability (which is true), but I would argue that Austin is a much better route-runner with much better hands. Therefore, he is deserving of a first-round pick, but I think he’s more of a 20-32 prospect who rose a bit too much do to his 40 time.
