The New York Jets could decide to take a tight end like Travis Kelce or Zach Ertz, they could even feel ambitious and draft Geno Smith, or they could just decide to trade down and stockpile picks to build depth across the board. The last option could very well be the best choice for the Jets, and Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News believes that Alabama Crimson Tide guard and center Barrett Jones could be the pick for the Jets if they decide to trade down from the 39th pick.

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Jones was once rated as a first-round prospect, and his draft stock has unsurprisingly fallen. The Jets have the best center in the NFL in Nick Mangold, so it is obvious that the Jets would be pegging Jones for the guard spot in New York by drafting him. Mehta specifically tells Jets fans to “keep an eye on” Barrett Jones today, and it is safe to trust word from the well-connected Daily News beat writer.

Mehta notes that the Jets would play Jones at guard, and the great thing about Jones is that he has the versatility to play all across the offensive line. The Jets are likely looking at the rival New England Patriots and how the Pats have several offensive linemen who can play at multiple spots, and this versatility is key for building depth. Drafting Jones would be a decent move if the Jets decide to trade down, because the name of the game is building talent at various spots when you trade down. With all the needs the Jets have, trading down from 39 would be a sensible move. But there is always more than one way to make a good pick in the draft.

Alabama Crimson Tide standout right tackle D.J. Fluker will most likely hear his name called in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and he will likely be picked between the 20th and 30th picks in the draft. Fluker has shown that he really wants to play at tackle in the pros by losing some weight, but Fluker is definitely a run blocking right tackle at the pro level given his size and significant struggles against speedy edge rushers.

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

According to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, Fluker met with four teams in the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, and Minnesota Vikings. All four of these teams could use the talented Alabama product either at tackle or guard, and they will likely try to play Fluker at tackle first and then go from there. For some reason, Fluker reminds me of current Patriots RT Marcus Cannon, whom the Pats are currently high on.

I doubt the Patriots draft Fluker, but I have stated a couple of times that they will likely show some interest. They are showing some interest right now after meeting with him, but the Ravens seem like a more likely landing spot for Fluker. The Ravens could use the big tackle to help bolster their run blocking, and they could even slot him inside.

The Carolina Panthers have the biggest need for an offensive lineman, and D.J. Fluker’s best fit is actually with the Panthers. Their situation at guard is horrendous, and starting right tackle Byron Bell has shown absolutely nothing in his first two years. Even if Fluker can’t protect the passer well at tackle, he can’t be as bad as Bell.

Each week, I like to run through the New England Patriots selection in the latest 2013 NFL Mock Draft done by our friends over at the FanSided.com main page. This week they had the Patriots taking Alabama Crimson Tide defensive tackle Jesse Williams with the 29th pick in the draft.

November 10, 2012; Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; Texas A

Williams is a solid defensive tackle prospect who, in my opinion, is clearly better than DTs deemed of similar value like Kawann Short. Interestingly enough, their mock draft had Short going one pick before the Patriots to the Denver Broncos (Jonathan Hankins was the 31st pick to the San Francisco 49ers).

Josh Sanchez writes that Williams will bring the Patriots pass rushing ability on the inside, but I view Williams as more of a run-stopper than a pass rusher. I don’t think he projects as a pass rusher, and I view him as a prototypical nose tackle. He has an excellent motor and can push the pocket on occasion with his strength, but his best asset is clearly in run defense. The Patriots already have stout run defenders on the inside in Vince Wilfork and Kyle Love, so we don’t need a guy like Williams.

I don’t like the fit here, and the defensive tackle I want is UNC’s Sylvester Williams. He projects better as a pass rusher, and he would provide the kind of interior rush that the Pats need. I want the Patriots to take a cornerback in the first round of the draft and then a DT like Sylvester Williams in the second round. Jesse Williams deserves to be selected in the late first round- just not by the New England Patriots.

The best pick for the Patriots in the late first is probably Johnthan Banks, who was not even selected in the first round of FanSided’s mock draft this week. Tony Pauline reported a couple of weeks ago that the New England Patriots are reportedly interested in taking Banks there, and I think that would be a solid selection for the Pats.
