The New England Patriots have four absences at today’s OTAs, with one of them being more notable than the others due to the sudden nature of the absence. ESPN Boston’s Field Yates informs us that tight end Rob Gronkowski, middle linebacker Brandon Spikes, wide receiver Julian Edelman, and running back Brandon Bolden are all absent at today’s session.

Stew Milne-USA TODAY Sports

Gronk obviously just had surgery on his left forearm yesterday, while Edelman is also nursing an injury. Meanwhile, Brandon Spikes is not going to participate in voluntary workouts, because he feels like he is better off working out on his own (completely understandable). Spikes has been quiet heading into his contract year, but this definitely isn’t a case of Spikes trying to leverage himself against the Patriots. He will be back with the team for minicamp in mid-June, so keep your eyes peeled for Spikes next month.

Brandon Bolden’s absence is the surprise of the four, and it is interesting to hear that the second-year running back is not participating. NESN’s Luke Hughes reports that the former Ole Miss star is out today due to an injured left foot. If you click on the piece linked to NESN, you’ll see pictures that Hughes found of Bolden in a walking boot on his left foot. The photo was found on his fiancee’s Instagram, as he was in Louisiana over the weekend.

New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski had a very successful Monday at Massachusetts General Hospital, as his surgery went well and the infection was fully eradicated by the time Gronkowski went under the knife. The doctors replaced the plate in Gronk’s left forearm during his fourth surgery, and he remains on track for a ten-week recovery period that would have him making it back to the Patriots in late training camp. It remains to be seen whether or not Gronkowski will need to have surgery on his back, and I have a feeling that will happen next month but will not cause Gronkowski to miss the beginning of the season. I expect the best but am prepared for the worst.

David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Patriots owner Robert Kraft talked about Gronkowski’s surgery and exuded confidence on the matter, “We were told it was as good a report as we could hope for.”

Cornerback Aqib Talib decided to re-sign with the New England Patriots on a one-year deal worth $5 million this offseason, which was an absolute steal for the Patriots considering the fears that Talib would get a big contract elsewhere and also considering that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie received the same deal from the Denver Broncos. Talib saw a drier market than expected due to an overflow of free agent CBs (such as new Miami Dolphins corner Brent Grimes), and a big 2013 season from Talib would showcase better consistency and yield bigger results for the Pats CB in free agency.

Talib spoke to the media today and said of staying in New England, via the Boston Herald, “It’s a great organization, a great team,” Talib said. ”This is where I wanted to be. Definitely, I feel like I fit in.”

One more from Talib, ”This is a great organization, a great team, great teammates.”

New England Patriots middle linebacker Brandon Spikes has been very quiet this offseason, and it may have something to do with the fact that he is headed to a contract year. Spikes is an integral part of the Patriots defense and sets the tone with his vicious and excellent play against the run, and that more than makes up for his poor coverage skills. He’ll look to improve upon his coverage in 2013, because that will show he can be a true three-down LB in this league and thus get paid more in free agency. Spikes did not participate in yesterday’s OTAs, but many players don’t participate in the first, voluntary session of OTAs.

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

One reason is because some players prefer to work out on their own, and that’s reportedly the case with Brandon Spikes. According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, Spikes will be in for the Patriots minicamp from the 11th-13th of June, per a source. The source stated that Spikes is not upset with his deal or looking for leverage, and that was expected but also a relief to quell any sneaking doubts. Spikes is headed into a contract year, but he isn’t foolish and won’t try to play hardball with the Patriots.

Spikes is fully healthy and Howe writes, “Spikes has been working out on his own, which he feels is the best way to prepare for the upcoming season.”

I definitely respect that, and he isn’t the only player around the league who feels that way. Howe notes that Spikes does not have any workout bonuses, so he didn’t lose any money by not participating in the Patriots OTAs.
