Anytime is time for the New England Patriots to shuffle their roster in any way head coach Bill Belichick sees fit. Surprise or not, it is what it is and the 2010 seventh-round pick defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick was this week’s surprise cut. It’s a surprise because Deaderick’s numbers are relatively good, he’s only 25 years-old, he was relatively cheap (only $630,000 this year) and the fact he was cut in May, it’s quite mind boggling.

Nov 18, 2012; Foxboro, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots defensive end Brandon Deaderick (71) during the fourth quarter against the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium.
In 34 games with 14 starts, Deaderick produced 51 total tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles. In six postseason games, he added 11 tackles and one sack, and last season, he played in 14 games with five starts recording 14 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. But with a more enhanced list of defensive lineman in place such as Rob Ninkovich, Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly, Chandler Jones, Justin Francis, Kyle Love, Jermaine Cunningham, Jake Bequette, Armond Armstead, Marcus Forston, Michael Buchanan, and Jason Vega, I think this move allows Armond Armstead to take Deaderick’s spot higher on the depth chart. It also makes interesting to speculate how Belichick is planning in utilizing our 2013 second round pick Jamie Collins as defensive lineman and/or linebacker.

Although guesses can run high as to the reason Deaderick was suddenly released, I can only think it might had something to do with a lack of fitting the Patriot way. Back in 2011, Deaderick was suspended by the team and reasons where unknown as Belichick, of course, maintained the situation between the player and the team. But rumors were that Deaderick had missed several meetings. It could very well be that roster competition just got tougher and coach Belichick was just not going to have team personnel distractions and lack of work ethic.

At least Deaderick was cut early in the season and for him it’s still in time to land on another club. Given that the Oakland Raiders was in need to draft defensive lineman, but waited until the sixth round to draft Stacy McGee and David Bass, Deaderick could be a good and inexpensive addition to their roster – sort of close to fill in the hole left by the departure of free agent Tommy Kelly to the Patriots, but not enough to supplement the departure of Desmond Bryant and Richard Seymour. During this year’s UDFA, the Raiders signed just one defensive tackle – Kurt Taufa’asau, but it’s worrisome as Taufa’asau had little play time due to hand and knee injury. We’ll see if the Raiders see value on Deaderick because I think his stats were relatively good.

The New England Patriots like to plan ahead and head coach Bill Belichick likes to keep an organized agenda with a plan in place and procrastination out of bounds. While Aaron Burr, an American politician and adventurer said, “Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow. Delay may give clearer light as to what is best to be one,” it doesn’t necessary fit Belichick’s agenda as his actions demonstrate a Charles Dickens analogy, “My advice is to never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.”

November 3, 2012; Morgantown, WV, USA; TCU Horned Frogs wide receiver Josh Boyce (82) catches a thirty one yard touchdown pass against the West Virginia Mountaineers during the second quarter at Milan Puskar Field.
Well, if procrastination is the thief of time, the Miami Dolphins should know that very well as the Patriots snatched the TCU wide receiver from the Dolphins 104th pick overall of the fourth round. As I heard and watched the announcer saying the Patriots 102nd overall pick, “On behalf of the New England Patriots, our coaches and our players were proud to announce our fifth pick of the fourth Round of the 2013 NFL draft is wide receiver from TCU Josh Boyce”.

A Patriots draft pick is always exciting to hear and to watch, mainly when we know the prospect player to be a quality player. But it was even better to find out later on via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that per Boyce the Dolphins had called him to inform he was going to be the 104th pick in the draft, but in a matter of minutes later, the Patriots called to inform he was going to be the 102nd pick instead and going to Foxboro.

The Dolphins had no other choice but to change their plans and draft Florida linebacker Jelani Jenkins with the 104th pick overall. Who got the best end of the deal? Absolutely the Patriots are the winner of this match since the Dolphins had to modify their draft plans by going with the next “best available player” instead of going with “best available-needed player”. In addition, the Dolphins really allowed themselves to be a victim of their own procrastination because if they really wanted Josh Boyce, they were in position to move up the board with picks 104th and 106th should the Eagles, Chiefs, Buccaneers or Jaguars be up for a trade.

As the Patriots gained a 5’11”, 206-pounder wider receiver with a talent to play in the slot, but strong legs and upper body to add depth at the wide receiver position, the Dolphins lost an opportunity in this round to add a slot receiver to supplement the roster with Brian Hartline. Since Jenkins was their “plan B”, the Dolphins will more likely utilize him as back up for Dannell Ellerbe and Philip Wheeler.

If healthy, Jenkins can make a big impact on the defense as in 2011 (before his injury) he ended the season with a combined 76 tackles (4.5 for loss), two sacks, and one interception. I would give the Dolphins some credit as they appear to be making the necessary adjustments to their roster, but the Patriots being able to select Boyce first, it could reflect a bigger game-changer when the season comes.

The New York Jets just can’t stay out of the media’s bullseye. As the New York Jets welcomed West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith in the 2013 NFL Draft in the second round at the No. 39 overall, the Jets said good-bye to Tim Tebow this morning, face-to-face as he arrived at the Jets facility for another day of workouts – reported by NFL Albert Breer.

Nov 22, 2012; East Rutherford, NJ, USA; New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow (15) leads his teammates and New England Patriots players in prayer after the game on Thanksgiving at Metlife Stadium.
In 2012, Tim Tebow had a record of 39 passing yards and 102 rushing yards and the question that comes to everyone minds is where will Tebow land next?

Drafted by the Denver Broncos as the 25th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Tebow had a great rookie season playing scarcely in six games as a back-up before starting the last three games of the Bronco’s season. He finished his rookie season with a total of 654 passing yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions, and he also rushed for 227 yards and six touchdowns. But in my opinion the real highlight of his career was during the first round of playoff in 2011 when the Broncos hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tebow threw for a career high of 316 yards and two touchdowns including a 80 yard touchdown to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime finishing at game with a 29-23 win.

NFL Network Marc Sessler has listed the New England Patriots as number one on his list for a possible landing spot for Tim Tebow and cited Bill Belichick saying “he’s a valuable guy” back in October 2012. It’s fair to say Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had his influence while with the Broncos back in 2010 in the drafting of Tebow. Also, Belichick had some interest in Tim Tebow in 2010 while it might not have been clear in the media, it was mentioned in the book War Room by Michael Holley, but that was back then.

Bill Belichick had Chad Johnson (Ochocinco) fit into the “no publicity stunts” with the Patriots organization, but Tebow is a tall order to put any publicity behind. He has good character, never got into trouble, so in that regards, it should not be a problem. Tebow just got into a bad situation at the wrong time, and by no means, I think he is “bad player”. He’s hard working and all he needs is a better opportunity and better coaching. But the money situation in Tebow’s contract complicate things.

It’s often noted that he forges an NLF career as a fullback/tight end X-factor, but at only 25 years-old, 6’3”, 236 lbs, (Gronk 6’6”, 265 lbs, Hernandez 6’1” 245 lbs) I think Tebow could be used as a flexible and versatile player in the Belichick offensive scheme. But if he’s unwilling to be flexible as reported by Adam Schefter then it’s a big No in Belichick’s perspective.

(And the more I think about it, the less I would want Tebow as a Patriots because there’s no way his publicity baggage will go away)
