The Patriots have some definite needs this offseason. One of them is their secondary, which was one of the all-time worst in 2011. One guy that might fill a hole there is Alabama safety Mark Barron. Read a little bit about him over at WEEI.

Randy Moss has thrown his hat back into the NFL ring. But it’s unlikely that he’ll end up with the Patriots, since Bill Belichick might not have forgiven him yet for 2010.

Another priority: The Patriots need to do something about Dan Koppen.

The Patriots’ tight ends this year were as good as anyone has ever seen. Will that continue next year, now that tight ends coach Brian Ferentz is joining his father in Iowa?

If there’s anything you think needs to be discussed, leave it in the comments section below. It’s going to be a long offseason, and let’s hope the Patriots make some big moves.

The best option might be someone whose name hasn’t come up all that much yet. Mike Wallace of the Pittsburgh Steelers is one of the fastest WRs in the league, and he has played very well for the Steelers. In 3 seasons, he has averaged over 1000 yards and 8 touchdowns with the Steelers. Put him in the same offense as an all-time great QB like Tom Brady, and we could be looking at some insane production.

Oh, and Bill Belichick likes him.

Wallace runs a lot of stuff besides deep routes now too. He runs a lot of stuff in front of the defenders because they’re playing him deep. They run a lot of crossing patterns where if he catches the ball he just runs away from the defense. It’s not all go-routes. He runs his share of those but he does a lot of other things too. He’s really developed as a receiver. He’s improved a lot from where he was in college in terms of his route technique and it looks like his ability to read coverages and make decisions on different coverage-looks people are trying to give him. He’s done a good job. It looks like he’s improving every week.

He’s a restricted free agent, so the Steelers could technically slap the franchise tag on him. However, the Steelers might not have the money to do that, so they may be forced to let him go. Adam Schefter lists the Pats as one of the teams who could snag him, along with the Bengals, Ravens, 49ers or Chiefs.

The only drawback is that if they sign Wallace, they’d have to give up a 1st round draft pick. But as we know, the Patriots have two first round picks, so it wouldn’t hit them nearly as hard as it would if they only had one. Especially since they’re likely to use a draft pick on a WR at some point anyway, if they don’t sign someone.

Wallace is exactly the kind of player the Patriots need. Let’s see if this deal gets done at some point.

According to Mayock (and common sense), the Patriots need WR help, and improvements almost across the board on defense.

Oct 29, 2011; South Bend, IN, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish wide receiver Michael Floyd (3) makes a catch and runs the ball in for a touchdown against the Navy Midshipmen at Notre Dame Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

One name that we’ve seen get thrown around a lot is Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd. He may be available for the Patriots with either the 27th or 31st pick, and he would add another dimension to their offense.

Another thing Mayock mentioned, which everyone should keep in mind, is that it’s highly unlikely that the Patriots will keep both of their first round picks. That’s common practice for the Patriots, who seem to trade down almost every year.

If the Patriots choose find a WR in free agency, they can use the draft to focus on defense. Rams WR Brandon Lloyd is one option, and his agent is already ready to talk turkey. Lloyd has a history with Josh McDaniels, and that could be a huge help for the Pats.

I can’t even lie about that. I’m tied to McDaniels. He uses me differently than other offensive coordinators used me in my entire career. He uses me as an every-play receiver. The short game, mid-range game, gimmick passes, deep balls. I do everything in this offense as opposed to other coordinators who would just run me off as the deep guy; run me off into double coverage and then say I’m not open. So I really like how Josh uses me within the offense. . . . I want to be used in ways where I feel comfortable and I can be successful and Josh knows how to do that.

That was Lloyd, back in December when McDaniels was still with the Rams. If he still feels that way, it might be easy for the Pats to get him on board.
