New England Patriots: Dion Lewis Injury Update

New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis was injured in Super Bowl LI. How is his hamstring doing?

The New England Patriots were able to defeat the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. On offense, the Patriots struggled for most of the first half, as there were some mistakes made early on.

After the historic comeback, the Patriots did suffer a loss heading into overtime. On the final play in regulation, running back Dion Lewis went down with a leg injury. He wasn’t able to play in overtime.

“I’m feeling great now,” he said to Nick O’Malley of MassLive.com.

On the play, it looked like Lewis’ knee buckled. However, he only suffered a strained hamstring.

“It’s my hamstring, I’m good,” Lewis said to O’Malley “It’s not my knee. I’ll be good in about two weeks.”

Lewis explained that he actually tweaked his hamstring earlier in the game. In the biggest game of the season, Lewis tried to tough it out before he physically couldn’t after the final play of regulation.

"“I tweaked my hamstring, I hurt it a little bit earlier in the game,” Lewis said to O’Malley. “But it’s the Super Bowl, I gotta go back in. I can’t just not go back in but I’m OK. Just aggravated it, I’m good.”"

In the win, Lewis wasn’t heavily involved in the offense. He totaled just six carries and one reception, which isn’t as much as some would have expected. Instead of Lewis, it was more of James White.

White could have arguably been the MVP of the Super Bowl. He had over 100 yards receiving, and three total touchdowns. In overtime with Lewis sidelined, it was White who scored the game-winning touchdown.

It’s good to see that nothing is seriously wrong with Lewis, who had a good comeback season from injury. Winning the Super Bowl will certainly help ease the pain for Lewis.
